Dolby GFS Winning Filmmaker’s Named

Dolby Laboratories and the award-winning nonprofit Ghetto Film School today announced the winners of the Dolby Institute x Ghetto Film School Filmmaker Challenge: Finish the Script 2021. The competition challenged GFS alumni ages 18-35 to create an original short film proposal in response to a creative prompt from award-winning filmmaker Carlos López Estrada (Blindspotting, Raya and the Last Dragon). This year’s winners include filmmakers representing four different projects Alejandra Araujo, Eleanor Cho, Christian Osagiede, and Antonio Salume and Amy B. Tiong.

The Cooke Look for Power Book

In the 1990s, almost every cinematographer in New York was using Cooke Optics S4/i lenses for commercials, music videos, and independent features, this according to Aaron Medick, one of the cinematographers on Power Book III: Raising Kanan. He became lead DP in the second season for Power Book II: Ghost after starting as B camera/Steadicam operator and moving up to DP for Power, which launched the franchise for cable and streaming service Starz. And it should come as no surprise that many of the DPs on the franchise come from New York, including Power lead DP Tim Ives, ASC who also shot the pilot.

Box Office Recovery Continues

August posted another pandemic-era high at the international box office and the second biggest month of global box office since the pandemic began, according to the latest report from Gower Street Analytics, London. The month delivered a $2 billion global box office, up on July’s $1.9 billion and only lagging February’s $2.3 billion, which was fueled by a record box office month in China. The international market (excluding China) contributed $1.11 billion to the August total, beating its previous pandemic-era high, recorded the prior month, of $960 million.

Dome Fest West Starts October 8

In what its organizers are billing as a groundbreaking film festival event, the first annual Dome Fest West will take place October 8-10 at the Orange Coast College Planetarium in Costa Mesa, California. Dome Fest West is 360-degree film festival and conference that will bring together the filmmaking community, Hollywood filmmakers and up-and-coming immersive content creators.

Cinity Gaining Market Share in China

According to industry statistics, premium large format screen installations have seen an increase of almost 19 percent year over year. They set a record in 2019, when 734 screens were installed, a 65 percent increase over 2018. As theatres slowly reopen worldwide following lockdowns due to COVID-19, the pace of adoption is expected to resume. Owned by the China Film Group and Huaxia Film Distribution, Cinity uses premium large format laser projection, immersive sound, and ultra-high frame rate capability. Today, with 57 installations and an almost equal number on tap in cities across China, Cinity enjoys cooperative agreements with many major Hollywood and Chinese studios. The system can be viewed at the Harmony Gold Preview House in West Hollywood, where filmmakers can also screen their latest projects at the industry’s highest frame rate.

Cinema Revenues Half of 2019, Report Says

The total revenues generated by the global cinema industry this year are set to only reach half of 2019’s pre-COVID revenues according to Omdia’s latest Cross Sector Windows report. Global box office revenues are still being impacted by studios experimenting with differing release windows, alternative platform distribution models such as video on demand, as well as government restrictions and more recently, a change in consumer confidence due to the Delta variant.

Karo Opening Ten New Theatres

Leading Russian cinema operator Karo will open ten Karo: New Generation locations with developer ADG over the next 10 months, with the first to open on November 15. Another six locations are slated to open by the end of the year. The remaining Karo: New Generation multiplexes will open in Russian regional cities — in collaboration with other real estate partners — beginning in the second quarter of 2022, with further large-scale expansion planned through 2024.
