New Multicines Opens with Christie Projection

The Ecuadorian cinema chain Multicines has just opened a new multiplex in the city of Guayaquil in which all 11 screens are fully equipped with Christie RGB pure laser projectors. The installation was carried out by Cinema Equipment & Supplies. The new multiplex is located in the Mall del Río shopping center in Guayaquil, the country’s main port and largest city.

Black Widow Released in ScreenX

In yet another sign that the motion picture business is emerging from the worst of the pandemic, over the weekend, the Walt Disney Company Marvel Studios action film Black Widow was released in the ScreenX format. ScreenX, from CJ4DPlex, is the world's premiere multi-projection system that provides a 270-degree panoramic film viewing experience.

Peter Rabbit’s Sound Team Returns

Currently in worldwide release from Columbia Pictures, director Will Gluck’s Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway is the charming sequel to the 2018 hit about a bunny who’s a loveable rogue. Much of the creative team from the first film reunited for the new movie, including its award-winning sound team led by re-recording mixer Kevin O’Connell, supervising sound editor Robert Mackenzie and re-recording mixer/supervising Andy Wright.

European, UK 2020 Box Office Down 70 Percent

While it has been widely understood that, because of the pandemic, 2020 was a terrible year for the cinema business, a new report from the European Audiovisual Observatory documents just how bad it really was. The theatrical market collapsed in 2020 with cinema attendance in the EU and the UK plummeting by 70.2 percent to an estimated 300 million tickets, down from more than one billion admissions in 2019 (the highest level since 2004). Gross box office earnings dropped correspondingly from Euro 7.20 billion to Euro 2.13 billion (US 2.4 billion), down by 70.4 percent from 2019, as the average ticket price in the EU remained stable at Euro 7.1 (USD 8.1).

Banh Ultimatum Vying for AICP Award

Currently short-listed for an Association of Independent Commercial Producers Post Award, Banh Ultimatum is a campy, two-minute spot disguised as a trailer for a 1980s vintage, action movie. The film was conceived and directed by freelance creative Jim Heekin and promotes Boulder, Colorado restaurant Daikon, which specializes in Vietnamese-style sandwiches. The editorial, visual effects, sound design and post-production services were completed at the post house 11 Dollar Bill.

A Tale of Two (Different) Lenses

When writer/director Christian Rousseau envisioned the look of No Loss // No Gain, he knew that the two worlds the film would portray would need to be photographed differently, but the idea of using completely different lenses from two different manufacturers was not part of the initial plan — until cinematographers John Sedlack and Kate Steinhebel had to switch which unit each would photograph.

A trained pianist and saxophonist who studied music production at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Phil McGowan, CAS, knows a thing or two about the perfect piece of music. After having dabbled in writing and composing music, McGowan soon found that his true passion was in mixing and engineering, and he moved across the country to focus on score mixing. Today, McGowan can be found mixing, recording and engineering from his studio – McGowan Soundworks, where he works on highly popular TV shows, films and video games, such as Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War.
