Showcase Cinemas today announced the official opening of its newest theatre, the Showcase Cinema de Lux Hanover Crossing, in Hanover, Massachusetts. Serving the entire South Shore community, the new theatre will open with films including the much-anticipated Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Lyle, Lyle Crocodile, Black Adam, and She Said.

Cinemark Opens New Theatre in Houston

The Cinemark Missouri City and XD Theatre has opened in the Fort Bend Town Center in southwest Houston. The 14-screen theatre is the first to showcase a reimagined theatre design, and, the company says, it brings the best in exhibition to Houston moviegoers, with immersive, first-class amenities including two XD auditoriums, all Luxury Lounger recliners and a new look and feel that enhances the customer experience from the minute they walk into the theatre, all the way to the end credits

The Totah Theatre is Reborn

One of New Mexico’s oldest movie theatres recently underwent a major renovation and has been given a new lease on life. Opened in 1949 and used as a movie theatre until 1982, the Totah Theatre thereafter was used as a performance theatre. In 2006, the Totah Theatre was converted into a multi-use performance hall. In 2020, San Juan County acquired, and in partnership with the City of Farmington renovated the facility to create a film center for the region.

Documentary Captures Changing Art Form

Nice Shoes helped directors Dawn Mikkelson and Keri Pickett tell the story of the incredible women who are changing the rhythm of the male-dominated art of Taiko in the new independent documentary Finding Her Beat. The facility provided post-production services for the film—screening at this month’s Doc NYC festival—with senior colorist Oscar Oboza working directly with the two filmmakers in applying the final grade.

Pinball Wizard

Nice Shoes provided post-production finishing for the MPI Original feature film Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game, a colorful story from New York City’s past. Senior colorist Marcy Robinson collaborated with writers/directors Austin and Meredith Bragg, producer Lana Link and cinematographer Jon Keng in finalizing the look of the film, which won the Overall Audience Choice and IFJA Directorial Debut awards at the Heartland International Film Festival and Best Narrative Feature at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival.

Making the Case for Laser Projection

As the cinema business steadily recovers from all the ramifications of the pandemic, exhibitors are faced with a series of decisions to make. They must upgrade their facilities to encourage moviegoers to return; they must cut costs in the face of a challenging global economy; and they must do what they can to address climate change. For a long time now, Wim Buyens, CEO of Cinionic, the consortium consisting of Barco, ALPD, and CGS, has been making the case that installing laser projection addresses to all three concerns. Recent events suggest people are beginning to listen to Buyens. It has been a busy month for Cinionic.
