First Virtually Produced Feature Underway

Signs of life for the movie industry have just been spotted on Mars. A group of veteran Hollywood filmmakers have announced plans for Gods of Mars, a feature-length sci-fi epic, to be produced through a blend of revolutionary virtual production technology and special effects techniques from the original Star Wars era. Providing a possible blueprint for filmmaking’s future, the hybrid technique allows productions to move quickly, and at a fraction of the cost of today’s $200-plus million studio blockbusters.

LG Talks Cinema and Future Plans

Last month LG Electronics officially confirmed that it has entered the cinema market with its LG LED Cinema Display technology. The company further announced that Showtime Cinemas in Taiwan had installed the first LG LED Cinema screen. The screen is 14 meters wide and seven meters high and has been certified by the Digital Cinema Initiatives. LG and Dolby Laboratories closely collaborated to integrate Dolby’s IMS3000 Integrated Media Server and Dolby Atmos sound into the new cinema system. I recently spoke via email with Jin An, product manager for LG LED Cinema products, to learn more about the technology and LG’s plans for the cinema market.

Muvi Cinemas Installs Saudi Arabia’s First Onyx

Muvi Cinemas in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia has installed the first Samsung Onyx Cinema LED screen in the kingdom. “Muvi Cinemas is proud to partner with Samsung Electronics to launch the new Onyx Cinema LED screen, bringing the latest innovation in cinemas to our upcoming developments at U-Walk Riyadh, Nakheel Mall Riyadh and Mall of Dhahran,” said Adon Quinn, general manager Muvi Cinemas.

Star Cinema Grill: A Closer Look at Onyx

The Star Cinema Grill in Richmond, Texas, a Houston suburb, made history in June when it installed the largest Samsung Onyx LED Cinema Screen in North America. Now that a few weeks have passed, I wanted to get a sense of how the screen was working, how moviegoers were responding to it and, also, to learn more about the challenges that went into installing such new technology. To do that I spoke with several of the key players involved in the selection, purchase, installation and operation of the Onyx screen.
