Sony Pictures Adds Dubbing Stage

Responding to the growing popularity of home theater systems with immersive sound, Sony Pictures Post Production Services has added a new mix stage dedicated to next-generation home theater audio formats. Located on the Sony Pictures lot in Culver City, the new stage is designed to simulate a home theater environment and equipped to master feature film and television projects in Dolby Atmos, Auro-3D and other immersive sound formats. This new room has been used to prepare several feature titles for Blu-ray Disc, 4K Ultra HD Disc, and digital delivery.

Considering Post Before Production

Still Devout is a new AFI Thesis film written and directed by Melissa Perez, which follows the story of a young woman who embarks on a heart-wrenching journey to help find answers and healing for her brother’s mental illness. To help optimize the film’s production workflow in preparation for post-production, Perez met with Burbank-based AlphaDogs for a personalized post consultation before the film was shot.

South Lake Audio Opens in Burbank

South Lake Audio Services, a union-signatory sound company offering mixing and ADR services for motion pictures and television, has launched in Burbank. Veteran sound executive Paul Rodriguez will serve as president with four-time Emmy-nominated re-recording mixer Keith Rogers heading the creative team. South Lake will operate out of the facilities of post-production powerhouse Roundabout Entertainment where it will have three mix stages and multiple ADR recording studios, with plans to add four more mix stages next year.

Nugen Audio Announces AMB Audio Management Batch Processor

Nugen Audio has launched the AMB Audio Management Batch processor, a suite of modular software that will expedite a range of audio management tasks. AMB expands on the concept of Nugen Audio's loudness management batch processing technology for high-speed audio loudness measurement and correction. AMB enables post-production facilities to speed workflows significantly and reduce delivery times for a range of different tasks, such as upmixing and loudness management. AMB also offers new features including threaded algorithm processing and multiple processing threads that are addressable for simultaneous parallel handling of files and queues.

Speaking with Sound Designer Scott Gershin

Renowned sound designer and feature film supervising sound editor Scott Gershin has worked on more than100 films and received 26 industry nominations, including a BAFTA Award for his work on American Beauty, Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, and Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler. He brings theatrical sound quality standards to bear on a wide range of consumer experiences, from apps and software, to blockbuster gaming titles like Resident Evil, Gears of War, Fable, and most recently id Software’s Doom. Gershin recently joined Technicolor as its director of sound editorial, where he leads the company’s expansion into sound design for gaming and immersive experiences and also continues to design and supervise sound for films. Digital Cinema Report recently spoke with Gershin about his career, the transformative role of technology in his work, and the tools he can’t do without for current projects.
