Fraser Wins Top ASC Prize for Lion

Greig Fraser, ASC, won the coveted Theatrical Award for best cinematography in a motion picture for Lion at the 31st Annual American Society of Cinematographers Awards for Outstanding Achievement. The ASC Spotlight Award went to Gorka Gómez Andreu, AEC, for House of Others. Winners in the TV categories included Fabian Wagner, BSC for Game of Thrones, Tod Campbell for Mr. Robot and Igor Martinovic for The Night Of.

WCPMedia Adds Features to Platform

The Wages of Sun

Cinematographer William Wages, ASC shot the upcoming CMT limited dramatic series Sun Records with Panasonic VariCam LT 4K cinema camcorders. The story was inspired by the Tony Award-winning musical Million Dollar Quartet, is a coming-of-age story set in Memphis, Tennessee during the tumultuous early days of the civil rights movement. Guided by Sam Phillips of the legendary Sun Records, young musicians like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins combined the styles of hillbilly country with the 1950s R&B sound, changing the course of music forever. The series chronicles these young artists’ often jarring and sudden meteoric rise to fame in the face of sweeping political change and social unrest.

A Million Dollar Workflow

Leslie Carney has more than twenty years of experience in television post-production. Working as post supervisor for MTV's Stranded with a Million Dollars, which will air February 21, she recently delivered 10 one-hour episodes. An efficient workflow has rarely been more critical. “The show was challenging,” said Carney. “It was shot over 40-days using 14 different types of cameras, including RoboCams and 4K Drones. We had to deal with a massive amount of media and all kinds of frame-rates and codecs.”

AFI Statement on Asghar Farhadi

The American Film Institute released a statement today regarding award-winning Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, who will not attend this year’s Academy Award ceremonies because of President Donald Trump’s executive order banning Iranians from entering the country. Farhadi, who received a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film for A Separation, is nominated again in the same category this year.

SMPTE, NAB Partner on Future of Cinema

Sony Pictures Adds IMAX Dub Stage

Sony Pictures Post Production Services has added a mix stage dedicated exclusively to IMAX. The new stage, which is equipped with a 24-fader Avid S6 mixing console, is the only dub stage on the West Coast that uses IMAX loudspeakers and meets specifications for mixing in its immersive IMAX 12.0 sound format. The room will be used to prepare 2D and 3D theatrical features and trailers for release to IMAX theaters worldwide.
