Fujifilm Unveils MK Series Cinema Lenses

Fujifilm has unveiled the MK Series of cinema lenses for E-mount cameras, which boast advanced optical performance, ultra-compact and lightweight design, as well as superb cost performance. The first in this series to be introduced, the Fujinon MK18-55mm T2.9, is a standard zoom with an 18-55mm focal length. It will be available in early March for $3,799.

SmallHD Introduces OLED Monitor

The 7.7-inch screen combines the renowned color accuracy and contrast ratio of an OLED display, with the feature set of the industry standard SmallHD 702-Bright so that it is ideal on camera or on a director’s rig. Able to produce wide color gamut color accuracy, it is an effective tool for DITs and directors on-set use.

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers’ SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal has earned a Distinction Award from the New York Metro, Philadelphia Metro, Atlanta, and Rochester Chapters of the Society for Technical Communication. By receiving this honor in the STC regional competition, in which entries are judged on technical content, achievement of purpose, and technical execution, the Journal advances to the STC International Summit Awards competition.

Guillermo del Toro Wins MPSE Filmmaker Award

Later this month, the Motion Picture Sound Editors will present Guillermo del Toro with its annual Filmmaker Award at the 64th Annual Golden Reel Awards ceremony. The Mexican-born filmmaker is being recognized for his “outstanding contributions to the art of cinema,” and joins such distinguished past honorees as Sam Raimi, Darren Aronofsky, George Lucas, Ang Lee, Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Brian Grazer and Gale Anne Hurd.

Fraser Relied on Outsight for Rogue One

Award-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser, ASC, ACS, relied on the Creamsource Sky, a water resistant five-color 1200W LED light system from Outsight for Lucasfilm’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. “Creamsource Sky is just so flexible and renders colors amazingly,” said Fraser. “I am obsessed with the technical, and Creamsource Sky produces really great skin tones. That can be a benefit and a curse when having to mix Sky with lights from other manufacturers, so I use a single brand of lighting for each source — one for skylight, one for a window, and another for facial lighting.”

Cooke Optics Expands to Meet Demand

Cooke Optics has confirmed that it is planning to open a second factory less than two miles from its current Leicester, England premises in order to keep up with growing demand for its award-winning lenses, as well as to facilitate the development and manufacture of new ranges. The new facility, scheduled to open in June, is expected to increase output by 25 percent.
