Lightyear’s Aria Re-Released

Lightyear Entertainment has announced the release of the newly-restored 30th anniversary edition of its groundbreaking multi-director film Aria. In Aria, ten of the world’s most creative and celebrated directors were each given the same brief: to choose a piece of opera music and then present a visual interpretation of that music with complete artistic freedom. Music was sourced from the massive RCA Red Seal catalog; the score features some of the world’s best opera singers.

Four New Titles Coming in Dolby Cinema

Four new titles are being added to the growing slate of movies to be shown at Dolby Cinema locations around the globe. They include Sony Pictures’ Passengers, due out December 21; Warner Bros. Pictures’ Live by Night, due out January 13; Paramount Pictures’ xXx: Return of Xander Cage, due out January 20; and Focus Features’ The Coldest City, due out July 28.

Imagining the Sound of the Future

Passengers, from director Morten Tyldum and Sony Pictures Entertainment, is a futuristic love story set on a mammoth spaceship carrying thousands of passengers, kept in sleep chambers, to a distant planet. For the sound team, based at Sony Pictures Post Production Services, and led by supervising sound editor/sound designer/re-recording mixer Will Files and re-recording mixer Kevin O’Connell, the space epic presented the interesting challenge of imagining the sound of the future.

Arcadia Cinema Upgrades to Laser Projection

Arcadia Cinema in Melzo, Italy has installed a Cinemeccanica Lux 50K laser projection system, which delivers 50,000 lumens on Christie 4230 projectors. The theatre also has a Dolby Atmos sound system. The first screening will be December 15 with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

One of the most distinctive aspects of writer-director Kenneth Lonergan’s new drama Manchester by the Sea is the quality of its sound design. “Making a quiet movie is hard, because, as a sound designer, you want to infuse every scene with something more than dialogue,” said supervising sound editor/re-recording mixer Jacob Ribicoff. “But you have to resist that temptation and keep it quiet and let the performances speak for themselves.”

Cognition Completes VR Post for Underwater

Cognition recently completed post on Underwater, a new 360 video created by Soma Fashion Network for the HTC Vive virtual reality system. The facility’s engineering team designed a custom workflow that allowed senior colorist Mike Eaves to grade the video in real time and view the results in 360-space. The groundbreaking process paves the way for other VR projects and keeps Cognition at the forefront of the new medium.
