Barco Claims More Than Fifty All-Laser Cinemas

At CineEurope 2017 in Barcelona June 19-22, Christie will preview what the company says is the first direct coupled Pure RGB laser-illuminated cinema projector not to need external cooling systems. Christie’s new CP4325-RGB is an addition to its Freedom Series of Pure RGB laser cinema projectors.
Barco is expanding its laser portfolio with two Smart Laser projectors that provide large cinema screens with up to 33,000 lumens brightness and 2K or 4K resolution. Barco’s Smart Laser projectors free exhibitors from all lamp-related hassle and cost, allowing them to cut costs and simplify their operations. What’s more, they also provide superior image quality. The brand-new DP2K-32BLP and DP4K-32BLP bring Barco’s laser projector range to 15 models in total, the widest laser portfolio in the industry.
Suning Cinema has installed Christie CP2208 cinema 6P laser projection systems in two newly opened multiplexes in Nanjing and Xuzhou. Suning Cinema is owned by the Chinese electronics retail giant Suning Commerce Group.
Novo Cinemas, part of the Elan Group in Qatar, has launched a new flagship cinema at Mall of Qatar, in Al Rayyan, Doha. The new cinema features 19 screens, including an IMAX Laser theatre that features the largest IMAX screen in the MENA region and seats 530 people. It also includes an upgraded sound system featuring 12 channels plus sub bass that delivers lifelike sound from all directions, including overhead, to fill the cinema with astonishing clarity, richness, detail, and depth. Barco is collaborating with Lucasfilm and ReedPOP on the Star Wars Celebration event, being held in Orlando, Florida at the Orange County Convention Center on April 13-16. During the four day event, devoted Star Wars fans will experience the latest in laser projection technology as they gather at the Galaxy Stage to attend high-profile guest panels, including Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Hayden Christensen and more, and watch a special tribute to 40 years of Star Wars.
If there is one thing for which the recently opened Odeon Sambil Dolby Atmos multiplex in Madrid stands out, it is the number of technological firsts clocked up by its twelve theatres. It is the first multiplex in Spain with all its screens equipped with 4K projectors – all from Christie – and also the first to include Dolby Atmos and Christie Vive Audio sound in all its theatres, and the only multiplex in Spain with more than one laser screen. In this case, Sambil has two screens equipped with laser projection, both with Christie Solaria CP42LH RGB projectors.
Christie has announced that James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment has renewed an exclusive, five-year agreement with the company for sharing know-how and technology to propel the future of immersive cinema experiences. “To push the boundary of digital cinema, one needs visionary, like-minded collaborators and that description fits Christie to a tee, given its long cinema heritage and impressive list of industry ‘firsts’ in the projection and visual display realms,” said Cameron. “Several years ago we began our relationship, which has worked well, so I’m pleased to be forging ahead again with Christie at my side.”
Barco has announced the opening of Japan’s first two theaters featuring Smart Laser technology. At both its Miyazaki and Omuta locations, cinema chain Central Cinema has replaced two existing projectors with Barco DP2K-20CLP projectors.
Barco and CMX, a subsidiary of Cinemex, have partnered to equip the new CMX Theater at the newly opened, billion dollar plus Brickell City Centre in Miami, Florida with Barco’s Smart Laser cinema projectors. When it opens in April, the cinema will deliver the region’s best movie presentation quality while operating at a significantly lower cost than traditional xenon-powered theaters.
