The Hollywood Professional Association has issued a call for proposals for the main program and breakfast roundtables for the 2023 HPA Tech Retreat. The event, which draws a full complement of innovative thinkers working at the intersection of artistry and technology, will take place February 20-23 at the Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Soa in Rancho Mirage, California.
The Television Academy has announced that Arri will receive the Philo T. Farnsworth Corporate Achievement Award for its more than a century of designing and manufacturing camera and lighting systems as well as its development of systemic technological solutions and service networks for a worldwide complex of film, broadcast, and media industries. The 74th Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy Awards ceremony will take place September 28 in Los Angeles.

DGene, a Silicon Valley and Shanghai-based developer of artificial intelligence technology, has launched operations in Los Angeles. The company is creating software and services that it says can leverage artificial intelligence and computer vision for entertainment content creation. According to the company, DGene offers proprietary solutions for virtual production, visual effects, digital restoration, volumetric and holographic capture, and the creation of virtual actors and digital influencers
Today, the Hollywood Professional Association Awards Committee announced the winners of the 2018 HPA Engineering Excellence Award. Winners were determined at a judging session held June 16. The awards will be presented November 15 at the 13th annual HPA Awards ceremony at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.

The world is abuzz with talk of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and in order to avoid conjuring up images of CIA missile strikes, or NSA spying, I’ll avoid using their more common name – drone. The technological and commercial promise of this mode of aviation seems boundless. Amazon talks of delivering packages this way someday soon. Someday you might order a pizza and a UAV will make a beeline navigating by GPS over traffic right to your door. But as things stand today, professional filmmakers in the United States are not allowed to use UAVs on a movie shoot.
Archimedia Technology, a new company whose technology and applications bridge the gap between content producers and their archives without loss of quality, has released Archimedia Master Player v2.1, an update to its software that frame-accurately plays all common archiving and master formats in use today. Version 2.1 adds precise support for timed text, commonly known as closed captions or subtitles, regardless of the standard or vendor — a feature that is especially useful for media companies that work with multiple standards and proprietary caption formats.
