Digital Cinema Report will, once again, present a Catalyst Award to the best new technology introduced at this year’s CinemaCon. The National Association of Theatre Owners’ annual trade show convenes at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas April 11-14. With the digital cinema transition essentially over and virtual print fee agreements drawing to a close, exhibitors have turned their attention to the future. Quality content is essential to the success of any movie theatre but today more is needed to remain competitive.

The world is abuzz with talk of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and in order to avoid conjuring up images of CIA missile strikes, or NSA spying, I’ll avoid using their more common name – drone. The technological and commercial promise of this mode of aviation seems boundless. Amazon talks of delivering packages this way someday soon. Someday you might order a pizza and a UAV will make a beeline navigating by GPS over traffic right to your door. But as things stand today, professional filmmakers in the United States are not allowed to use UAVs on a movie shoot.

Archimedia Master Player Upgrade Supports Closed Captions, Subtitles

Archimedia Technology, a new company whose technology and applications bridge the gap between content producers and their archives without loss of quality, has released Archimedia Master Player v2.1, an update to its software that frame-accurately plays all common archiving and master formats in use today. Version 2.1 adds precise support for timed text, commonly known as closed captions or subtitles, regardless of the standard or vendor — a feature that is especially useful for media companies that work with multiple standards and proprietary caption formats.

SMPTE Names 2014 Directors

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers today announced its 2014 directors. Alan Lambshead, SMPTE standards vice president, appointed Bob Edge, Oliver Morgan, and Howard Lukk to serve as standards directors; Paul Stechly, SMPTE membership vice president, appointed Bruce Devlin, Karl Kuhn, and William C. Miller to serve as membership directors; and Patrick Griffis, SMPTE education vice president, appointed Michael DeValue, V. Michael Bove, Peter Putman, and Al Kovalick to serve as education directors.

Red Studios Installs Maxx Digital Evo 6G Media Server

HGST, a Western Digital company, and Maxx Digital have announced that Red Studios Hollywood has deployed the Maxx Digital Evo 6G 16-bay rack mount media server. The server is powered by 4TB HGST Ultrastar 7K4000 enterprise-class hard disk drives and configured with ATTO Raid controller to support capacity, bandwidth and performance needs for streaming and “screening” next-generation 4K, 5K and 6K high-resolution files.
