CinemaCon 2019: Netflix and PLF Theatres

From the earliest days of feature length films until the 1980s, the movie going experience typically happened in a very large theatre with a really big screen. Faced with rising costs and increasing competition from television, exhibitors of that sad era cut their buildings into multi-screen complexes to increase ticket sales and maximize profits on concessions. Today, faced with a different set of economic realities, exhibitors around the world are increasingly responding by creating movie palaces that rival all but the most spectacular theatres of the turn of the last century. One trend at this year’s CinemaCon, which wrapped up last week, was the continuing rise of premium large format theatres. Another trend was the almost comical trashing of Netflix. PLF theatres and Netflix are both here to stay; we’ve been here before

NCM Adds to Pre-Show Fun with Shuffle

At CinemaCon this week National CineMedia, creators of the Noovie pre-show seen in movie theaters nationwide, unveiled their new movie trivia mobile game Shuffle. Designed as a web app at www.noovie.com/shuffle, Shuffle is a whirlwind collection of card-based movie-trivia mini-games where players must answer questions as quickly as possible to earn points before time runs out. Questions will come fast and furious, and players will be sorting, flinging, and swiping cards at a breakneck pace to accumulate points and earn the best score. Movie fans can test their Hollywood IQ anytime, anywhere, with a fun mix of challenging Shuffle trivia games based on their favorite films.

GDC to Launch GoGoCinema

GDC Technology announced today that it will launch its GoGoCinema on-demand-platform and app later this year. GoGoCinema was introduced at last year’s CinemaCon.

GoGoCinema enables moviegoers not only to book a theatre on the network, but also to see a movie of their choice listed on the platform from any handheld device or computer.

Samsung Claims 34 Onyx Installations Worldwide, Three More Confirmed for 2019

Samsung today announced two upcoming Onyx installations at the Star Cinema Grill in Texas and at Warehouse Cinema by HighRock Group in Maryland. “Since our unveiling for the U.S. market at CinemaCon last year, Samsung Onyx has revolutionized the cinema experience globally,” said Nick Conti, senior business development manager for cinema, Samsung Electronics America. “Today’s theatre expansion announcements in the U.S. showcase the praise and significant interest we have received from the industry since last year’s unveiling and we are very excited to work with these visionary exhibitors on successful installations this year.”

Cineworld Centralizes on AAM Software

Arts Alliance Media announced today that they are significantly extending their technological partnership with the Cineworld Group, one of the world’s largest exhibition companies. Following Cineworld’s recent acquisition of Regal Cinemas in the USA, the exhibitor has decided to automate their scheduling and content management using Screenwriter in Regal Cinemas’ 7,361 screens, and expand Producer’s coverage across Cineworld’s entire portfolio, which includes Picturehouse, Cinema City, Cineworld, and Regal Cinemas. AAM will also provide third line technical support to the new sites.

Cinemaxx Expands Deal with Unique X

Unique X has expanded its operations in South East Asia in a new deal with fast-growing Indonesian cinema chain, Cinemaxx. The agreement will see Unique X install RosettaBridge theatre management system, RosettaNet and Basekey key delivery message management systems across all 47 Cinemaxx sites, currently incorporating a total of 239 screens.
