SMPTE, NAB Partner on Future of Cinema

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers today released details about the 2017 NAB Show's Future of Cinema Conference: The Intersection of Technology, Art, & Commerce in Cinema, produced in partnership with SMPTE. Scheduled for April 22-23 during the 2017 NAB Show, the conference will feature two full days of expert presentations delving into how technical innovation, artistic intent, and evolving consumption and business models will interact to shape the future of cinema.

Sony Pictures Adds IMAX Dub Stage

Sony Pictures Post Production Services has added a mix stage dedicated exclusively to IMAX. The new stage, which is equipped with a 24-fader Avid S6 mixing console, is the only dub stage on the West Coast that uses IMAX loudspeakers and meets specifications for mixing in its immersive IMAX 12.0 sound format. The room will be used to prepare 2D and 3D theatrical features and trailers for release to IMAX theaters worldwide.

New Lenses Increase Tilt Function

Schneider-Kreuznach has introduced Xenon FF-Prime Cine-Tilt lenses that combine similar form-factors and capabilities of the company’s popular Full-Frame Primes with added tilt function up to ±4°. By sustaining the field of view during focus and tilt actions, the new Cine-Tilt design makes possible previously unimaginable images from the freely moving and tilting focus planes.

Iraqi Filmmaker Will Not Attend Festival

Hussein Hassan, the director of the award-winning Iraqi film Reseba – The Dark Wind, has withdrawn his visa application to the United States Consulate for clearance to attend the North American premiere of his film at the 34th edition of Miami Dade College's Miami Film Festival. Festival director Jaie Laplante said the Festival will proceed with the screening of Reseba – The Dark Wind as scheduled, but with a deep sense of loss and disappointment.

MPSE Announces 2017 Golden Reel Nominees

The Motion Picture Sound Editors today announced nominees for the 64th MPSE Golden Reel Awards. Nominees represent the work of the world’s most talented sound artists and their contributions to the past year’s most outstanding feature film, television, animation and computer entertainment productions. The 2017 MPSE Filmmaker Award winner is Guillermo del Toro. This year’s MPSE Career Achievement Award goes to Harry Cohen.

Mixers Honored for Westworld Sound

South Lake Audio Services re-recording mixers Keith Rogers, CAS and Scott Weber have received a nomination in the Cinema Audio Society’s 53rd CAS Awards for their work on the HBO television series Westworld. They share the nomination with production mixer John Pritchett, CAS; ADR mixer Mark Kondracki and Foley mixer Geordy Sincavage. The nomination, in the category Television – One Hour, comes for the series’ pilot episode, The Original.

FujiFilm Names Fletcher Director of Sales

The Optical Devices Division of FujiFilm has appointed Tom Fletcher as director of sales. In his new role, Fletcher will oversee sales and promotion of broadcast and cinema lenses in North America. Working under the guidance of division vice president Gordon Tubbs, Fletcher will lead the sales efforts of six regional managers in North America. Fletcher’s position is effective immediately.

A Century Old, Arri Looks to the Future

This year marks 100 years since August Arnold and Robert Richter rented a small former shoemaker’s store in Munich and set up shop as a film technology firm. The two young friends started with just one product: a copying machine they built on a lathe Richter had received as a Christmas present from his parents. Taking the first two letters of their surnames, they christened their new enterprise Arri.
