Kathy Staab bought the Jane Pickens Theatre in Newport, Rhode Island in 2004, initially simply as an investment while still active in her long and successful career in fashion and retail. Over the years she had held various merchandising executive positions at Brookstone (Gardeners Eden), Talbots, Jordan Marsh and Macy’s where she developed a clear sense of current trends and customer demands. When exactly the theatre became not simply an investment but her passion is unclear but today she’s using all the skills she learned in retail to revitalize and remake one of the oldest theatres in North America.
Screenvision has announced that it will distribute content for Digital Cinema Destinations (Digiplex). The first joint theatrical title will be the documentary The United States of Football, which will debut August 23.
On August 20 Robbie Williams will perform at Estonia’s 70,000-capacity Tallinn Song Festival Ground and fans in digital cinemas around the world will have the chance to catch the entertainer live on the big screen.
This year the buzz at CineEurope seemed to be all about alternative content, or event cinema as it’s being increasingly referred to. As chair of the ECA it’s difficult to gain real perspective from the eye of the storm but having seen the business grow from an occasional add-on for exhibitors to a serious revenue stream in more recent years, the sense in Barcelona last month was that in event cinema, the possibilities are endless and the sense of real excitement was tangible. Everyone from major studios to major cinema chains to independents to technical partners seemed keen to know more, hear more, do more to exploit this established and still growing revenue stream.
The Event Cinema Association has launched the first website to promote and support live and recorded cinema events, also known as alternative content, which is increasingly being screened and finding new audiences in cinemas around the world.
