CJ CGV to Unveil 4DX VR at CinemaCon

For the first time under its corporate banner CJ CGV will exhibit at CinemaCon 2016, which convenes next week at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The company will be in Booth 2003A. In addition to the latest advances and developments with 4DX – the multisensory cinema technology with motion and environmental effects – and ScreenX – the world’s first 270-degree, multi-projection system used within a theatre setting, CJ CGV will be demonstrating its newest addition to the immersive cinema universe: 4DX VR.

The Spring: Single Camera VR

I recently worked as a camera operator on a VR feature called The Spring. The first question of many questions that I had for Greg Passmore, owner of Passmore Labs, Austin, Texas was, “When you are shooting a 3D 360 degree VR movie in a cave where at times you are perilously close to the top of the caves due to the water level, where do you position the crew?” His reply threw me off guard. He said, “Anywhere I want.” It was then that he told me he was shooting with one Red Epic camera. The question then was, how?

IP Man 3 Coming to China in 4DX

IP Man 3 will be released in China in 4DX on March 4. The film is highly anticipated there because it stars Donnie Yen and Mike Tyson. 4DX fans are looking forward to being immersed in the action battles between the two men. According to CJ 4DPlex, Chinese audiences love local action franchise movies that are screened with its 4DX technology, which features motion seats and environmental effects.

Screenings of Imagine Dragons: Smoke + Mirrors Live music concert will be enhanced with Philips LightVibes. An initial three cinemas will deploy the technology for immersive cinema with more than 790 additional cinemas offering the title via distribution, broadening access to the concert for many more fans around the world. Tyrone Walker-Hepburn, owner of the Genesis independent cinema in London, which will show the UK screening said, “As an independent cinema, we’re all about differentiating ourselves. So being able to offer interesting, premium content like the Imagine Dragons concert using Philips LightVibes really sets us apart. It helps us to attract new audiences and revenue streams, which are key to our growth plans. People describe us as a maverick cinema and ventures like this cement that reputation."

4DX Success in Japan Continues

After initially being released in November 2015, the Japanese animation film Girls und Panzer: The Film sky-rocketed from 24th to 8th in the national box office rankings this month when it was released in 4DX. The average occupancy rate during the films first weekend in 4DX hit 97 percent at the 27 4DX screens it was available. The film is set to be screened at all 33 4DX screens in Japan this March.

4DX Claims Immersive Market Dominance

CJ 4DPlex said today that the company has installed more than 30,000 seats as of this month. The company claims that it is well ahead of any other 4D movie theater brand in the world with nearly three times the number of seats than the closest 4D-cinema competitor. In addition, the company said, 4DX theaters have the capacity to accommodate almost 55 million moviegoers per year, currently reaching 228 auditoriums in 37 counties.

Immersive Technology Boosts Movie Theatre Revenue in Japan

Immersive theater technology from CJ 4DPlex, featuring motion seats and environmental effects, has had a strong impact on the growing Japanese box office. For example, the 4DX version of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, released in December, has thus far brought in more than 1 billion yen ($85 million), accounting for more than 10 percent of the title’s total Japanese box office to date. Overall in 2015, 4DX versions of top Hollywood titles such as Jurassic World, Furious 7 and Mad Max: Fury Road recorded 7 percent of the country’s total box office for each title, even though 4DX auditoriums claim only 3.5 percent of the total number of theaters in Japan.
