A trained pianist and saxophonist who studied music production at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Phil McGowan, CAS, knows a thing or two about the perfect piece of music. After having dabbled in writing and composing music, McGowan soon found that his true passion was in mixing and engineering, and he moved across the country to focus on score mixing. Today, McGowan can be found mixing, recording and engineering from his studio – McGowan Soundworks, where he works on highly popular TV shows, films and video games, such as Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War.

Three Amigos Launch IAS

Sound and mastering engineer Fernando Richard, mixing engineer Ivan Markovic and sound designer Francisco Bissone recently teamed up to launch Immersive Audio Solutions in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The studio is designed to offer immersive sound solutions for a wide array of platforms. A Dolby Atmos-approved studio, IAS also has the capabilities of mixing for Sony 360 and Ambisonic formats.

As word spreads and people from near and far flock to witness her miracles, a disgraced journalist hoping to revive his career visits the small New England town to investigate.

Creating a True Sense of Sound

Independent sound mixer Alan Meyerson is currently working on the upcoming Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022) movie, and just finished working on the score of the reboot of Dune, set for release in October 2021. Many of his projects have become case studies in the importance of how music and sound play an integral part to the overall storytelling. And no matter where he has set up shop for the day, Meyerson relies on Nugen Audio’s Halo Upmix and Halo Downmix plug-ins, along with Stereoizer and Nugen Producer, to ensure clients receive the superior quality of sound they seek from his professional services.

This week, the Motion Picture Sound Editors will present George Miller with its annual Filmmaker Award, the organization’s highest honor. The Australian director is being recognized for a diverse body of work that includes Happy Feet (an Academy Award-winner for Best Animated Feature), Babe: A Pig in the City and Lorenzo’s Oil, as well as Mad Max and its three sequels. Miller has called his masterpiece, Mad Max: Fury Road, “A movie we see with our ears.”

Diversified, a global technology solutions provider, recently ran into this challenge when it came to a project at BerkleeNYC, a campus-based recording studio formerly known as Avatar Studios. In the process of building a cost-effective IP network for the school’s renowned Power Station recording studio, Diversified turned to TSL Products to provide an IP routing interface that marries TSL’s virtual control processor, the GTP-V1, and its renowned Virtual Panels into a solution that TSL has coined, IP-Cross Connect.

As one of the preeminent feature film re-recording mixers working today, two-time British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award nominee Jaime Baksht has spent almost three decades behind the re-recording console, credited for mixing I Am No Longer Here (2020, Ariel Award Best Sound), Pan’s Labyrinth (2006, BAFTA Nominee, Goya Winner Best Sound), and Darius Marder’s directorial debut Sound of Metal (2021, BAFTA, CAS, AMPS Sound Nominee). Most recently, he received an Oscar nomination for Best Sound for his work on Sound of Metal. In film work, he says, every emotion sounds different.
