This week at CineEurope 2018, the Barco cinema joint venture Cinionic and chip designer AMD a are showcasing what the companies say are the world’s first multiplayer, augmented reality cinema lobby gaming applications aimed at creating a new social adventure in theatres and other location-based entertainment venues. The technology combines digital cinema lobby signage with multi-player augmented reality technology to create mini attractions that engage patrons in thrilling entertainment before and after the feature presentation.
Baltic exhibitor Cinamon Cinemas has selected Volfoni as its 3D technology provider for the rollout of multiple new screens. Cinamon Cinemas currently operates 23 screens in five different locations. Volfoni’s 3D cinema technology will be deployed as part of a major renovation of their multiplex in Tartu, Estonia.
The Laser Illuminated Projector Association reports that as of the end of 2017, the global installed base of high-end RGB laser projectors had reached nearly 700, an increase of nearly 100 percent since 2016, according to industry analysts at IHS Markit. In addition, the analyst firm also reported that, according to industry sales figures estimates, the number of laser phosphor projectors installed in cinemas has now surpassed 10,000; again an approximately 100 percent growth rate over the previous year.
On the first day of CineEurope, theatre management software provider Unique Digital announced that it is rebranding itself as UniqueX. The first product to launch under the new name is the Rosetta POS point of sale system, now available in UK, Finland, Denmark and Spain.

Strike Media has appointed Melissa Cogavin to the new position of consultant. Her role will be to grow the footprint and profile of Strike Media and advise on event cinema campaigns. Cogavin will also work closely on the expansion and growth of the social film app MyFilmClub for Wez Merchant, owner of both Strike Media and Under The Influence Of, MyFilmClub’s parent company.
