The Effects of La Fortuna

The Madrid-based digital post-production company Twin Pines was responsible for the visual effects in La Fortuna, the new Movistar+ series directed by Alejandro Amenábar. Overall, the series contains around one thousand digitally retouched shots which called for a year’s work to recreate underwater scenes, an epic naval battle, and a road journey in the United States, among many other sequences.

Macbeth, in Black and White

The Tragedy of Macbeth—written four centuries ago for the stage—has been translated to the screen throughout cinema history. Replete with medieval atmosphere, witches, and murder, the iconic tale has now been retold by director Joel Coen. Working with director of photography Bruno Delbonnel ASC, AFC, Coen developed a visual approach to the bloody proceedings that emphasizes Shakespeare’s matchless language and the faces of the actors delivering it.

Cinema Faces Uncertain 2022

While exhibitors witnessed a dramatic ending to a dramatic year at the global box office, the market is still dealing with uncertainly as the new year begins. Last year saw challenges and triumphs and ultimately delivered an estimated Global Box Office of $21.4 billion. This is in line with the estimate of $21.6 billion which the London analytics firm Gower Street released in October. The year end was marked by concerns about the new Omicron Covid variant and witnessed re-closures in many countries. These included complete lockdowns in Austria (now re-open), Netherlands, Denmark, and Belgium (briefly, with the government u-turning on a re-closure policy just two days after they came in and following many cinemas defying the initial directive).

As Dolby Atmos continues to become a dominant force in the audio industry, studios like Melbourne-based Red Road Immersive are pushing the boundaries with sound design, bringing unparalleled audio experiences to listeners. Red Road owner Angus Davidson has been in the music business for four decades. He recently handled the sound on Little Tornadoes, a feature film that premiered at the 2021 Melbourne International Film Festival.

Shooting The Matrix Resurrections

In the two decades since we first entered The Matrix, there’s been a quantum leap in computing and filmmaking technology. Visionary filmmaker Lana Wachowski made sure she considered both those changes before going back down the rabbit hole. “There have been huge advances in computing that called for an updated visual representation of the virtual world of The Matrix,” explains Daniele Massaccesi, co-cinematographer with John Toll, ASC on The Matrix Resurrections. “Lana wanted to create a synthetic world that would be believable to humans in 2021. It is therefore photoreal and full of color.”

National Film Registry Adds 25 Movies

Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden has announced the annual selection of the 25 influential motion pictures to be inducted into the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. Selected for their cultural, historic, or aesthetic importance to preserve the nation’s film heritage, the newest selections include epic trilogies, major roles for Jennifer Lopez and Cicely Tyson, extraordinary, animated features, comedy and music, and films that took on racially motivated violence against people of color decades ago.

Fathom Presents Betty White Tribute

DCDC Reducing Prices

The Digital Cinema Distribution Coalition, the world’s largest cinema satellite delivery network announced today that it will be reducing prices and lowering minimum commitments on many of its services effective January 1. The company said the sweeping pricing reductions will affect feature film, live, and event delivery for both the exhibitor and content provider communities.

Report Sees Improving Box Office

With 2021 just a couple of weeks and a few blockbusters short of the finishing line, the London-based firm Gower Street Analytics decided to look ahead to what's on the horizon for next year. And, after a much stronger box office year with exhibitors, distributors, and audiences becoming more comfortable in a COVID-world, Gower Street's first global box office prediction for 2022 suggests a significant improvement over 2021.
