SMPTE Elevates 16 to Fellow Status

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has announced that this year — the Society's centennial year — it will elevate 16 industry leaders to the status of SMPTE Fellow. This honor is conferred on individuals who have, through their proficiency and contributions to the industry, attained an outstanding rank among members of the Society. The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has announced conference program details for the SMPTE 2016 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition, being held October 25-27 in Hollywood, California. During SMPTE 2016, conference sessions will feature industry experts from around the world, who will present 73 papers exploring timely, compelling topics that are shaping the field of motion imaging.

Reel Thing Explores Restoration, Preservation

The 38th edition of The Reel Thing, a three-day symposium addressing audio/visual restoration and archiving, will explore the constantly evolving ecosystem of film and digital restoration and preservation. This year's program will examine legacy film restorations and showcase modern technologies being used to future-proof collections and keep them viable for future display and distribution formats. The event will take place August 18-20 at the Academy's Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood.

SMPTE Celebrates a Century

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers is celebrating its Centennial with celebrations worldwide. The celebrations include honoring SMPTE's Founders' Day and the 100th anniversary of its incorporation – July 24 and August 10, respectively. The festivities, which include cakes ornamented with the SMPTE logo and messages of well wishes, actually began in 2015 during the biennial SMPTE technical conference in Sydney and continue with global celebrations held by SMPTE Sections and partner organizations.

SMPTE 2016 Registration Opens

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has opened registration for the SMPTE 2016 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition scheduled for October 25-27 in Hollywood, California. The event begins with the daylong SMPTE 2016 Symposium on October 24. Early bird rates are available now through August 20. SMPTE 2016 will also celebrate the Society's 100th anniversary.

UNIC President Praises European Distributor, Exhibitor Relationships

Phil Clapp, president of the International Union of Cinemas used his keynote address at CineEurope 2016 to highlight the strong relationship between cinema operators and their partners in film distribution, seeing it as key both to the success enjoyed by the European industry in 2015, and in years to come.

ASC Names Kees Van Oostrum President

The Board of Governors of the American Society of Cinematographers has elected Kees Van Oostrum to serve as president of the organization. This is Oostrum’s first term, which will run for one year, beginning immediately. The ASC Board also selected its slate of officers. They include: Bill Bennett, Dean Cundey and Lowell Peterson as vice presidents; Levi Isaacs as treasurer; Fred Goodich as secretary; and Roberto Schaefer as sergeant-at-arms.
