Reel Thing Convenes August 24

The Reel Thing, a symposium that supports the Association of Moving Image Archivists, will open with the U.S. premiere of a new restoration of the Oscar-nominated 1960 film La Verite (The Truth). Two additional new 4K restorations also will be shown during The Reel Thing, including the U.S. premiere of Howard Hawks’ Scarface and the world premiere of Alex Cox’s Sid and Nancy. The Reel Thing takes place August 24-26 at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood.

EditFest 2017 Program Announced

EditFest, the day long celebration of the art and craft of editing, returns to the Frank Wells Theater at Walt Disney Studios August 12. Presented by American Cinema Editors, EditFest 2017 presents top-level film and television editors sharing their experiences and insights. Featuring panels, clips, and conversation, EditFest offers a unique opportunity for attendees to engage with panelists and colleagues throughout the day and during a lively post-event reception.

Considering Classic Movie Sound

The Hollywood Section of SMPTE will host a demonstration of classic movie sound technology at its monthly meeting Tuesday, July 25, in Hollywood. The event will include a live performance by Joe Rinaudo, founder of the Silent Cinema Society, on an American Fotoplayer (provided by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences). The Fotoplayer is a type of player piano used in movie theaters during the silent era to provide sound effects and music.

HPA Announces 2017 Engineering Excellence Award Winner

The Hollywood Professional Association Awards Committee has announced the winners of the 2017 Engineering Excellence Awards. Winners were determined after a judging session held June 17 after presentations to a panel of industry experts. The awards will be presented November 16 at the 12th annual HPA Awards gala at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, California.

HPA Seeks Applicants for Second Year of Young Entertainment Professionals Program

On the heels of last year’s successful launch of the Young Entertainment Professionals Program, the Hollywood Professional Association is pleased to announce the second year of the YEP program. YEP 2017 seeks passionate and driven applicants open to mentorship and to developing lasting relationships with industry leaders and other young professionals. The HPA’s YEP program provides a framework for young professionals to network and learn from peers and mentors. YEPs selected for the yearlong program will participate in signature HPA events, including the HPA Tech Retreat and HPA Awards, as well as exclusive and high-powered mentoring events.

UNIC Launches Mentoring Program for Women in Cinema

The International Union of Cinemas has launched its Women’s Cinema Leadership Scheme, a one-year pilot mentoring program for women in cinema exhibition. The program will provide six rising female European cinema professionals with the unique opportunity to network with and receive one-to-one career advice from a group of senior female executives recognized for their leadership and business success across the wider cinema landscape.

Global Cinema Federation Announced at CineEurope 2017
