Influential European trade organization IBC and TM Forum, the digital business trade association today jointly announced a new collaboration to drive open innovation between the telecoms and media industries. The collaboration will include a focus on developing multi-company, rapid proof-of-concept projects to be showcased at each other’s flagship events and a range of joint marketing and content sharing activities.
In his annual address last week to the CinemaCon 2018 opening day audience, John Fithian, president and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners, gave a speech laced with familiar, and historically sound, themes: good movies drive people to theatres and good movies need to be seen on the big screen. Yes, there are months when box office numbers are down but those are dramatically offset by months where people of all ages fill the seats for the newest big movie. Yes, there are, and always will be, competition for moviegoers’ time and attention, but nothing will ever replace the big screen experience. Period.
The Event Cinema Association today announced that founder and managing director Melissa Cogavin has mutually agreed with the board of directors to resign her position. The board has elected to manage the day-to-day running of the ECA for an interim period and will be seeking a replacement for Cogavin in the near future.

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has issued a call for technical manuscript proposals for the SMPTE 2018 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition, which will be held October 23-25 at a new venue, the Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites in downtown Los Angeles. Authors must submit their proposals by May 28.
The American Society of Cinematographers has named Eric Rodli as executive director, effective immediately. In his new role, Rodli will be responsible for driving initiatives that uphold the mission of the organization – to advance the art and science of cinematography – and creating a supportive community for its members.
The CTC has named Sarah Lewthwaite, managing director and senior vice president Europe, Movio, and Sandie Caffelle, sales and marketing manager, Jack Roe to its board of governors.
