ATSC Elects New Board Members

Members of the Advanced Television Systems Committee have elected five industry executives to serve on the ATSC Board of Directors for three-year terms beginning January 2016. New to the board are Christopher Homer, Vice President, Operations & Engineering, PBS, and Anne Schelle, Executive Director, Pearl TV. They will join re-elected board members Brett Jenkins, Media General; Richard Friedel, Fox Networks; and current board chairman Glenn Reitmeier, NBC Universal.

SMPTE, NAB Renew Tech Summit with Future of Cinema Conference

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers today announced that the newly crafted NAB Show's The Future of Cinema Conference: The Immortal Movie, produced in partnership with SMPTE, will explore how content creators and storytellers combine artistry with motion-imaging technology to thrive today — and especially into the future. Scheduled for April 16-17 during the 2016 NAB Show, the refocused technical conference will examine this topic with an emphasis on the work and inspiration of the industry's newest generation of filmmakers. Registration for the conference opened on December 21.

Vista Group To Acquire Stake in Share Dimension

Vista Group International has announced the signing of a strategic partnership with Share Dimension, a Dutch software development company specializing in predictive analytics business intelligence solutions for cinema exhibitors. The transaction, which will complete on January 4, 2016, will see Vista owning 50 percent equity and will further fuel Share Dimension’s strong ambitions for the coming years.

LIPA Recommends Industry Practice for Measuring Speckle

The Laser Illuminated Projector Association has released to the public its Recommended Practice: Measurement of Speckle in Laboratory Conditions, a guide for laser projector makers, installers, and theater operators to measure and compare this common laser attribute caused when coherent light bounces off a rough surface. The practice is the first of its kind to detail procedures and equipment for obtaining a reference figure, and is being made available by LIPA at no cost as an industry service at the LIPA website at www.LIPAinfo.org/speckleRP.

Screenvision Announces Deal with Kaos Connect

Screenvision has formed a strategic alliance with with Kaos Connect, a newly formed event cinema company. Kaos Connect was founded by former NCM/Fathom executives, Shelly Maxwell and Dan Diamond, who are recognized experts and leaders in alternative content for movie theatres. Kaos will be Screenvision’s exclusive source of event cinema programming beginning in early 2016.

Core Male Fans First to See Star Wars

Movio has released insights on the audience buying tickets for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The opening night audience of Star Wars: The Force Awakens is 70.4 percent male which is 6.5 percentage points greater than opening night audience of Jurassic World (63.9 percent, on par with a typical blockbuster), Movio found.

Christie Brings Magic to Star Wars Premiere

Christie provided guests attending the world premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens with truly spectacular red carpet displays. “Disney and Christie have been sharing projection and display ideas and innovations for several years now to provide audiences with unparalleled moviegoing experiences,” said Michael Kern, Disney’s vice president, special events production and technical services, “so there was no question regarding who we would enlist to provide spectacular red carpet displays to make this a special night for everyone attending.”
