Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Garden Stays Green

Sightseers at The Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh Scotland are welcomed to the new John Hope Gateway visitor center where digital signage systems help them get oriented to explore the facility. Designed by Edward Cullinan architects the center is a prime example of green construction and sustainability. Established in 1670 next to Holyrood Palace RBGE is a world-renowned scientific center for the study of plants their diversity and conservation.

Something to Rave About

Dallas Texas-based Rave Motion Pictures will deploy nearly 300 new digital screens nationwide as part two of its agreement with Cinedigm Digital Cinema. All of the screens will incorporate Barco Series-II projectors and Doremi playback server technology. Rave currently operates 62 locations and approximately 1000 screens across the US.  Under the Phase 1 deployment deal which took place in 2006 475 Doremi servers were installed in Rave theatres.  Phase 2 adds another 277 units for a total of 787 Doremi servers in operation throughout Rave’s circuit.

Negotiating a Non-Interference Shoot

When cinematographer James Neihouse shot the Kennedy Space Center footage for the recently released film Hubble 3D Imax it was on a non-interference basis so Neihouse and his team had to be able to pick up and move quickly. He says his strongest support was the OConnor 2575 head. “We chose this head because it is stable enough to handle the 90 pound weight of the Imax 30 perf 3D camera that was developed for the International Space Station film shot in 1998-2001 yet light enough to be easily manageable when shooting with a small crew ” says Neihouse.

Driving Traffic to the Booth

In need of something special last month for the New York Auto Show exhibit of its client Mercedes-Benz designer and producer Dimensional Communications tapped Lightspeed Design to executive produce a six-minute 3D Stereoscopic film for the event. The fast-paced driving film was captured in 3D at 4K resolution and presented on both a large rear-projection screen as well as multiple 3D monitors in a massive 88-foot by 158-foot open exhibit area.

Rising Sun Pictures Hopes to Benefit from Tax Breaks

Rising Sun Pictures which has produced visual effects for more than sixty feature films including the Harry Potter series expects to be a chief beneficiary of newly expanded trade rebates designed to promote film production in Australia. The Australian government announced this week an update of its Screen Production Incentive program which provides rebates for various activities related to film and television production. Among other things the update includes a dramatic lowering of the threshold for PDV (post digital and visual effects) work completed in Australia.

Starplex Cinemas Adds 123 Digital Screens

Starplex Cinemas of Dallas Texas will convert 123 additional screens to digital cinema using Barco's new Series-II projectors. As part of Cinedigm's Phase 2 digital cinema deployment program the conversions are underway with full deployment expected by November. Barco's turnkey installation which also includes servers by GDC Technology will be supported by Barco's Network Operations Center and 24/7/365 Call Center. Barco's new DP2K-C series projectors will be used in Starplex's small and mid-sized venues.

Uptown Entertainment Converts to Digital

Wildwood Theatres Converts Two Theatres

Wildwood Theatres is installing Sony Electronics’ 4K digital cinema technology at its Beloit and Janesville Wisconsin locations. The exhibitor has already completed its digital conversion at 20 of its 26 screens. Wildwood’s 4K roll-out also includes outfitting four screens for 3D digital projection combining Sony’s single-projector 3D lens system with RealD 3D technology enabling the exhibitor to present the highest-quality 2D and 3D digital projection.
