ICTA Names EMEA Award Winners

The International Cinema Technology Association has announced the 2022 winners of the ICTA EMEA Awards, celebrating technological leadership, design and innovation in the cinema exhibition sector. The award winners are Le Grand Rex, Paris, Classic Cinema of the Year; UGC Ciné Cité Part-Dieu, Lyon, New Build Cinema of the Year; and Cineworld, Belfast, Best Cinema Refurbishment of the Year. Rolv Gjestland of Film & Kino Norway will be presented with a special recognition award to celebrate his contributions to cinema design, presentation excellence and international collaboration in cinema.

Saudi Arabia’s Cinema Success Grows

There was so much happening at the global box office in 2021 it was, perhaps, easy to overlook one of the most significant pieces of news: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia overtook Italy in annual box office in terms US dollars, according to a new report from the London-based analytics firm Gower Street. This put Saudi Arabia into the top six markets in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region, the report said. It marked the first time on modern record that one of the so-called big six European markets (UK/Ireland, France, Germany, Russia, Italy, and Spain) had been supplanted.

Cinionic Expands Relationship with Saudi Arabia’s Muvi Cinemas

Cinionic, the Barco, CGS, and ALPD cinema joint venture, has expanded its relationship with Muvi to extend laser-powered cinema to more audiences across Saudi Arabia. Muvi, the country’s first homegrown theater chain, launched in 2019 as part of the introduction of the cinema experience in the region. Cinionic, a partner since Muvi’s inception, and as part of the ongoing expansion of cinema in the Kingdom, will equip more than 400 new screens with technology from its award-winning laser portfolio, including Barco Smart Laser and Series 4 projectors.

Red Names Alan Piper Managing Director for EMEA

Red Digital Cinema has named Alan Piper managing director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Piper, a veteran in the industry with previous experience at Red, will oversee operations, sales, marketing, services, and customer relationships in the region, while expanding the company’s interface with post-production facilities. He will be based in the Red offices at Pinewood Studios and will manage the launch of Red’s new storefront facility in Soho early next year.

QSC Names Chan Senior Director, North Asia; Promotes Two Others

William Chan has joined QSC as senior director, North Asia, reporting to Markus Winkler, senior vice president Asia and EMEA. In this newly created role, Chan is responsible for sales and business operations in the North Asia region, including a focus on driving new revenue growth in Greater China and Japan for QSC’s live sound, cinema, and systems portfolios.

Second Emerging Cinema Markets Conference to be held November 19-21 in Istanbul

The Emerging Cinema Markets Conference will be held for its second year November 19-21 in Istanbul. Building on the success of last year’s event, this year special focus sessions will be held on Turkey, Africa, the Balkans, Central Asia and other emerging countries. There will also be an update on the Gulf Cooperation Council cinema industry hosted by The Big Picture Cinema Consultants. Keynote speakers and the full schedule will be announced over the coming months.
