Sami Haddad is the founder and president of Digital Light Sources and has more than thirty years experience in specialty lighting in various industries including cinema, entertainment and science. DLS was established roughly one year ago as a niche provider of lighting, projection, audio and video products and disinfection services to cinema and entertainment markets. When it became obvious that movie theatres were going to be in need of highly-specialized cleaning services when they reopen in the wake of the COVD-19 pandemic, his company formed an exclusive and strategic partnership with American Ultraviolet, a company that uses ultraviolet C lighting to disinfect businesses of all kinds. Our conversation started there.

DGA Theatre Gets Total Renovation

The Directors Guild of America recently completed a total renovation of its flagship motion picture exhibition space at the prestigious DGA Theatre in Los Angeles. Guided by a guild committee of six leading filmmakers, the renewal project has moved the 600-seat theatre to the forefront of cinema technology with the installation of custom-built Dolby Vision laser projection and a Dolby Atmos immersive sound system encompassing more than 70 Meyer Sound cinema loudspeakers.

SMPTE Hollywood Launches Ask an Expert Webinar Series

The Hollywood Section of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has launched a new webinar series aimed at young people interested in behind-the-scenes careers in the entertainment industry. Titled Ask a Hollywood Expert, the series features successful, young professionals, across a range of technical disciplines including post production, visual effects and editorial, talking about how they got their start and what they learned as they advanced in their careers.

Kelly Tricarico is the founder, president and CEO of Cinema Pro, Inc and has been involved in the entertainment construction industry for nearly twenty years. She is also an executive member of the board of the newly formed trade group Women in Exhibition. Australians Overwhelmingly Say They Will Return to Cinemas

Australia and New Zealand’s largest film exhibitor, Event Cinemas, has released the results from the largest survey of cinemagoers. Conducted in April and May, more than 20,000 Australians provided opinions and captured sentiment on returning to cinemas once they reopen. Overwhelmingly, Australians say they are comfortable returning to cinemas with social distancing measures in place with 94 percent confirming that they intend to return at the same frequency or more as before the pandemic.

Fathom to Screen The Outpost in Select Theatres July 2

Fathom Events, alongside Screen Media, a Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment company, will return to theatres with a first-run film this summer with Millennium Media and Rod Lurie’s military thriller, The Outpost, a true story based on Jake Tapper’s best-selling non-fiction book, The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor. The exclusive event is scheduled to begin on July 2 on approximately 500 screens, followed by a weeklong limited theatrical run starting July 3. Each screening will be accompanied by a special introduction from select cast members and exclusive behind-the-scenes footage.
