Future Strong for AR and MR, New Report Says

Augmented reality and mixed reality present many opportunities for application enhancement and new monetization opportunities, a new report shows, but the technologies are still a long-way from being an everyday feature of consumers' lives. The report, from industry analyst Futuresources, synthesizes fieldwork drawn from vendors, content creators and service providers, along with mobile device forecasts and existing research. It found that the race is on to develop the essential killer application and, ultimately, to establish the dominant platform for mobile AR/MR content.

Cinépolis Opens Maryland Theatre

Cinépolis USA is opening a premium large format theatre in Kimco Realty’s Kentlands Market Square in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas-Gaithersburg, anticipated to open in 2019, marks Cinépolis USA’s debut into Maryland and adds to the brand’s existing list of 16 movie houses in the U.S., six of which are Luxury Cinemas. The approximately 34,000-square-foot movie theater will hold 540 seats.

Isle of Wight Festival Live in UHD

Snell Advanced Media’s LiveTouch replay and highlights system and its Kahuna 9600 production switcher were central to the first live UHD production workflow of the 2017 Isle of Wight Festival. Based in High Wycombe, UK, CTV Outside Broadcast has 12 trucks in operation and has provided live coverage for a wide range of events including The European Golf Tour, The London Marathon as well as primetime studio-based programs including Strictly Come Dancing and The Brit Awards.

Considering Classic Movie Sound

The Hollywood Section of SMPTE will host a demonstration of classic movie sound technology at its monthly meeting Tuesday, July 25, in Hollywood. The event will include a live performance by Joe Rinaudo, founder of the Silent Cinema Society, on an American Fotoplayer (provided by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences). The Fotoplayer is a type of player piano used in movie theaters during the silent era to provide sound effects and music.
