Free Solo Leads Documentary Award Nominees

The Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association have announced the nominees for the third annual Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards. The winners will be presented their awards at a gala event November 10 at BRIC in Brooklyn, New York. The film Free Solo leads this year with six nominations and one honor, including Best Documentary, Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi for Best Directors, Best Sports Documentary, Most Innovative Documentary, Best Cinematography, Best Editing and a Most Compelling Living Subject of a Documentary honor for Alex Honnold.

OGC, Khronos Group Work to Improve Geospatial and 3D Interoperability

The Open Geospatial Consortium and the Khronos Group are joining forces to advance open geospatial standards related to the fields of augmented and virtual reality, distributed simulation, and 3D content services. As part of the liaison, and through collaborative participation in OGC and Khronos initiatives, the two organizations will work jointly to develop use cases and requirements for open geospatial standards concerning 3D, virtual and augmented reality APIs, and related graphical representations.

ASC Breaks Ground on Arri Educational Center

The American Society of Cinematographers has broken ground on the construction of the new ASC Arri Educational Center. The contemporary building, located behind the historic ASC Clubhouse in Hollywood, will serve as a hub for the organization’s ongoing efforts to educate the next generation of filmmakers on the art and craft of cinematography. The structure also will be home to all print and digital publications staff. The ASC Arri Educational Center offers a modern, inspired space with offices and meeting rooms, and is slated for completion by 2019.

NYWIFT Announces Board of Directors Election Results

New York Women in Film & Television has announced the results of its 2018 board of directors election. As a nonprofit 501c3 public charity, NYWIFT is governed by an 18-member board of directors. Board members serve on committees in the areas of development, membership, communications, programming and special events. The board is elected by the membership. Six spots on the board have been filled, with four returning members and two new members.

SMPTE’s Hollywood Section Hosts Career Day

The Hollywood Section of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers recently hosted students from colleges and universities across Southern California for Career Day, a day-long event focused on technology-oriented employment opportunities in the media and entertainment industry. The event included speeches, roundtables, and panel discussions from industry leaders on subjects ranging from job-seeking strategies to emerging technologies employed in cinema, broadcast, and virtual reality production.

EDCF Selects New Board Members

In its recent elections, the European Digital Cinema Forum selected several new board members, covering a wide range of the cinema business across many European countries. This breadth is good for the EDCF and is important for the group so that it can continue to take into account all members’ interests and provide real value to the industry as a whole
