Roundabout Provided Sound Services for SXSW Short Seth

Roundabout Entertainment provided sound design, sound mixing and DCP services for Seth, director Zach Lasry’s short film screening at this month’s SXSW Film Festival. Lorenzo Gutierrez was the sound designer and re-recording mixer for the dark comedy about a man’s desperate attempt to impress his father. Seth will screen as part of SXSW’s Midnight Shorts Competition.

Meet Snake Oil Sam

Director Arlene Bogna's independent film The Ballad of Snake Oil Sam will be screened at the New Filmmakers Los Angeles Festival on Match 19. New Filmmakers Los Angeles is a non-profit organization designed to showcase innovative works by emerging global filmmakers. “Part of the Alliance of Women Directors initiative with NFMLA, The Ballad of Snake Oil Sam is an off beat ride into the creative areas we seldom explore with captivating photography and production design along with committed performances,” said NFMLA creative director/co-founder, Susie Kim. “This curious short film will engage you till the end.”

QuVis Releases 4K Stand Alone DCP Player

QuVis Technologies has released the Ovation II DCP player 2.1, which the company says is the first player capable of supporting 4K playback in a small form factor and at an affordable price. QuVis spokesman Keith Doughty says the Ovation II is expected to ease the challenges faced by independent film festival organizers for playback and screening. It can also provide a platform for independent film producers to efficiently and effectively test their DCPs before showing them on the big screen.

Sanad Films Win Big at the Berlin

Three Arab films supported by Sanad, the development and post-production fund of twofour54, have won awards at the 66th annual Berlin International Film Festival held this month in Germany. Mohamed Ben Attia, director of Inhebbek Hedi (Hedi), supported by Sanad in development and post-production, received the Best First Feature Award (50,000 euros) during the official closing ceremony, and the film’s lead actor Majd Mastour received the Silver Bear for Best Actor as part of the official competition awards.

Aspera Berlinale Official Supplier Two Years in a Row

For the second year in a row, Aspera has been selected as an Official Supplier for the 66th Berlin International Film Festival, taking place February 11-21. As one of the most important events for the international film industry, Berlinale attracts more than 300,000 attendees from around the world, and showcases some 400 films of every genre, length and format on more than 60 different screens, totaling over 2500 screenings.

Berlinale Embraces Laser Projection

The Berlin International Film Festival is entering a new era of projection, as Barco’s Flagship Laser projector will screen a selection of movies at this year’s festival. For this 66th edition, Barco set up a Flagship Laser DP4K-60L projector at the Friedrichstadt-Palast venue, Europe’s biggest show theater with1,895 seats. Here, the festival shows films from the competition and holds Berlinale Special Galas.

Miami International Film Festival Opens March 4

Monica Bellucci, Iciar Bollaín, Gavin Hood and Deepa Mehtawill all receive tributes in a new Marquee Series to be presented at the 33rd edition of Miami Dade College’s Miami International Film Festival scheduled for March 4-13. This year’s festival showcases 129 films, including 100 feature films and documentaries and 29 short films produced and directed by both renowned and emerging talent from 40 countries. Forty-six are directed or co-directed by women.

Barco Supports Sundance New Frontier

Barco, the official projection provider for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, brings to life several key virtual reality and art installations at the New Frontier exhibition with its large venue projectors and presentation switchers. The festival also uses Barco digital cinema projectors in all 23 of its movie theater venues for official screenings.

Kodak, Sundance Collaborate To Support Independent Filmmakers

Kodak and Sundance Institute are collaborating to support the Institute’s preservation efforts while also supporting independent filmmakers who are using motion picture film. As part of the new alliance, Kodak is providing film to the Sundance Institute’s Archives, which hosts a wealth of images, tapes and artifacts preserved over its rich 35-year history. Kodak is also creating 35mm exhibition prints for filmmakers who originated their projects on film and those with features in the U.S. Competition categories at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival who want to screen a film print. Additionally, Kodak is offering Sundance Lab participants a 50 percent discount on film purchased for origination of their project.
