PVR and INOX to Merge

India’s two largest move theatre chains – PVR and INOX – have announced that they plan to merge to form one giant entertainment company. Both PVR and INOX are public listed companies engaged in cinema exhibition, related food and beverages and allied activities. "The proposed amalgamation would be in the best interest of the transferee company and the transferor company and their respective shareholders, employees, creditors, and other stakeholders," the companies said in filing the merger plan.

PVR Cinemas Installs Ion Technology to Combat Airborne Viruses

PVR Cinemas has installed new ion technology that neutralizes 99.9 percent of airborne viruses. The negative ion generator devices are installed at key locations inside cinemas including the auditoriums where the guests spend the maximum time. PVR says it is the first and only cinema chain in the world to deploy this technology.

Rooftop Drive-In Opens in Mumbai

PVR Cinemas has installed a Christie CP4450-RGB large-format RGB pure laser projection system for its new drive-in theatre in Mumbai. Located in Bandra Kurla Complex, a prominent upmarket commercial hub in downtown Mumbai, this drive-in theatre is housed on the rooftop of a premium retail mall named Jio World Drive developed by Reliance Industries.

Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar Account for Half of all SVOD Customers in India

Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar accounted for 50 percent of all streaming video-on-demand subscribers in India in 2020, according to Omdia’s latest 2021 Online Video Market and Consumer Trends Report. Omidia’s principal analyst, TV and online video, consumer Constantinos Papavassilopoulos said, “The online video market of India is steadily growing its foothold in every direction. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the growth rate of an already dynamic and robust OTT market.”
