MPSE to Honor John Paul Fasal with Career Achievement Award

The Motion Picture Sound Editors announced today that it will present sound designer and sound recordist John Paul Fasal with its 2018 MPSE Career Achievement Award. A 30-year veteran of the sound industry, Fasal has contributed to more than 150 motion pictures and is best known for his groundbreaking work in field recording. Among his many credits are Top Gun, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Interstellar, The Dark Knight, American Sniper and this year’s box office hit Dunkirk. Fasal will receive his award at the MPSE Golden Reel Awards ceremony, February 18, 2018 in Los Angeles.

HPA Gives Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation to NASA, Amazon

The Hollywood Professional Association has awarded the organization’s prestigious Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation to National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Amazon Web Services, and AWS Elemental, an Amazon Web Services Company, for the first public live 4K stream from the International Space Station. The honor, whose recipient was selected by a jury of industry veterans, was conceived to recognize companies and individuals who have demonstrated excellence, whether in the development of workflow and process or project to support creative storytelling or in technical innovation. Dennis Doros Elected President of the Association of Moving Image Archivists

Dennis Doros, co-owner of Milestone Films, has been elected president of the international Association of Moving Image Archivists. Doros will be inducted into office at the annual AMIA Conference in New Orleans November 29 – December 2, when he will begin a two-year term. He succeeds Andrea Kalas, who has led the organization forward for the past two years.

AMIA, Boston Light & Sound, Film Foundation Host 35mm Projection Workshop

The Association of Moving Image Archivists and Boston Light & Sound, in partnership with Martin Scorsese’s non-profit organization The Film Foundation, will host a three-day, intermediate-level film projection workshop offering expert-led training in the proper handling and presentation of 35mm film in theaters. The hands-on, educational event takes place October 30 through November 1 at Boston Light & Sound in Boston.

ASC Announces 2018 Honorees

In recognition of their special contributions to the art of cinematography, the American Society of Cinematographers has named four honorees to be feted at the 32nd ASC Awards for Outstanding Achievement. Russell Carpenter will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award; Russell Boyd will earn the International Award; Alan Caso will get the Career Achievement in Television Award; and Stephen Lighthill will take home the Presidents Award. The presentations will be made at the annual ASC awards gala on February 17, 2018, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood.
