Classic Cinemas is a family-owned business, founded in 1978 and based in Downers Grove, Illinois. Today the Johnson family operates 15 locations and 130 screens. Many of those locations were acquired by Classic Cinemas in a state of disrepair and were meticulously restored to their original splendor while updating to the latest technology. The family belongs to several preservation societies, including the Theatre Historical Society. The company received the Landmark Illinois Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award for Stewardship in 2011. Their newest location, the Meadowview in Kankakee, Illinois, is a newly expanded seven screen movie theatre with luxury heated recliner seats, 7.1 surround sound, and 4K digital projection. The Meadowview expansion was supervised by TK Architects International, which is headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri. I recently spoke via email with TKA principal Theresa English about the challenges of renovating an older cinema. Here is our conversation:
National CineMedia has signed multiple extended cinema advertising affiliate agreements with nine exhibitors. These long-term agreements will bring NCM’s Noovie pre-show entertainment program to more than 315 screens across 39 theaters. GDC Technology has developed a new media server designed specifically for Sony’s SRX-R320 4K digital cinema projector introduced in 2009. The SR-1130 Integrated Media Block is a Digital Cinema Initiative compliant media server produced for the aforesaid Sony’s 4K projector. It is flexible in that it not only replaces Sony’s LMT-300 digital cinema server to extend the life of SRX-R320 projector while maintaining its projection quality and standard, but also integrates seamlessly in the future with all series of DLP Cinema projectors.

The deal begins with Venom: Let There Be Carnage in September, that will play in more than 350 ScreenX auditoriums across the country and around the world.
Moving Image Technologies has been awarded a contract from Alamo Drafthouse Cinema to provide equipment and furnishings for its Alamo theatre location in Staten Island, New York. The award follows a recently announced contract from an Alamo Drafthouse franchisee for a new theatre in Washington, D.C.
