Amazon Opens Virtual Production Stage

Amazon Studios has officially opened Stage 15, its new virtual production stage, and the formation of the new Amazon Studios Virtual Production department. The stage combines two former stages to accommodate an LED wall that is 80 feet in diameter and 26 feet tall. The first feature film to shoot on the new Stage 15 will be the family holiday comedy Candy Cane Lane, directed by Reggie Hudlin and starring Eddie Murphy.

Spain’s Hemisfèric Theatre Installs Christie Laser Projection

The Hemisfèric, part of the cultural and scientific complex at the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, Spain, has installed a Christie CP4450-RGB pure laser cinema projector in its main theatre. It is the biggest screen of its kind in Spain, with a concave dome covering 900 square meters (9687 square feet) and 24 meters (79 feet) in diameter. Christie’s partner Ingevideo installed the projector.

AMIA Conference Being Held December 7-9 in Pittsburgh

The 32nd edition of the annual Association of Moving Image Archivists conference is back in person and back in Pittsburgh for the first time since 2016. From December 7-9 at the Omni William Penn Hotel, more than 500 professionals and supporters will gather to discuss the most recent developments in archival technology, sustainable ways of preserving media, and the simple tools being used to save some of the most at-risk moving images around the world.

Russell Crowe Directs Himself in Poker Face

For award-winning cinematographer Aaron McLisky, ACS, and for Academy Award winning director, co-writer, and leading actor Russell Crowe, shooting the psychological thriller Poker Face came down to two things: achieving a modern look that maintained a painterly quality as well as choosing the right aspect ratio to capture the ensemble cast in a single frame. One other challenge on the set was having a director who was also the leading actor.

Gwendolyn Yates Whittle to Receive MPSE Career Achievement Award

The Motion Picture Sound Editors will honor two-time Academy Award-nominated supervising sound editor Gwendolyn Yates Whittle with its 2023 Career Achievement Award. Whittle, whose more than 150 film and television credits include Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, Minority Report, Munich, Iron Man, Cloverfield, Jurassic World and Fight Club, will receive the award at the 70th MPSE Golden Reel Awards February 26, at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles.

Jellyfish Pictures Announces Restructuring of its Leadership Team

HPA Announces Annual Awards

The HPA Awards returned to the historic Hollywood Legion Theater tonight to celebrate exceptional achievement in color grading, sound, editing, and visual effects. The gala, which filled the Legion to capacity, bestowed additional honors for engineering excellence and outstanding achievement in restoration.
