NYWIFT Names Winners of Loreen Arbus Disability Awareness Grants

New York Women in Film & Television has named Lisa Denker the winner of the Loreen Arbus Disability Awareness Grant for her documentary feature Still Judy. The first-ever Honorable Mention award was given to Alyscia Cunningham for her documentary feature I Am More Than My Hair. The film completion grant, now in its 14th year, is provided through the generosity of longtime disability rights advocate Loreen Arbus and awards $7,500 to a woman filmmaker for a film on physical or developmental disability issues; the Honorable Mention winner receives $1,500.

Cooke Donates Archive to Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

Cooke Optics has transferred its archives, an historic collection dating from 1886, to a new permanent home at the Margaret Herrick Library, the main repository of research materials of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, located in Beverly Hills, California. The Cooke Archives, which includes documents, photographs and audiotapes cataloguing the rich history of Cooke lenses as well as the wider development of the film and photography sectors, will be available for research purposes

This week, the Motion Picture Sound Editors will present George Miller with its annual Filmmaker Award, the organization’s highest honor. The Australian director is being recognized for a diverse body of work that includes Happy Feet (an Academy Award-winner for Best Animated Feature), Babe: A Pig in the City and Lorenzo’s Oil, as well as Mad Max and its three sequels. Miller has called his masterpiece, Mad Max: Fury Road, “A movie we see with our ears.”

Goldcrest Hires Colorist Steve Beganyi

Goldcrest Post has added colorist Steve Beganyi to its team of senior artists. Bringing more than 20 years of post-production experience, much of it centering on documentary films and television series, Beganyi joins a department dedicated to sound and picture finishing for docs. His recent credits include Jerusalem: City of Faith and Fury for CNN and My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman for Netflix.

Vitec Group Acquires Quasar Science

The Vitec Group has acquired Quasar Science, a leading LED lighting technology provider. The business will become part of the Group’s Production Solutions Division alongside Litepanels the award-winning supplier of LED lighting panels for television lighting and cinematography acquired by the Group in 2008.

Streamland Media to Acquire Sim Post-Production Business

Streamland Media has announced that it is acquiring Sim Video International’s post-production business. The company says the strategic acquisition builds upon Streamland’s outstanding roster of artists and expands its technical portfolio by increasing its unscripted and scripted content offerings in North America. The acquisition bolsters Streamland’s existing presence in Los Angeles and Vancouver and gives the company a substantial footprint in New York City to provide exceptional picture and sound finishing.
