Animation Company Laika Expands into Live Action with Seventeen

The award-winning animation company Laika known for such films as Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings and Missing Link, is expanding into live action. The studio has optioned Seventeen, the upcoming first novel by acclaimed screenwriter John Brownlow (The Minaturist, Sylvia). Currently in production on its sixth animated feature film, Laika secured the rights in an intense bidding war and plans to adapt it as a live action project. The announcement was made by Laika president and CEO Travis Knight.

Mixing Live Action with VFX

Following its Netflix launch in January, Fate: The Winx Saga, the live-action TV adaptation of Nickelodeon’s animated series Winx Club quickly shot to number one in the U.S. and number three in the U.K. Cinematographer Frida Wendel FSF shot the series. As Wendell put it, one of her considerations during the live action shoot was how to play around with the visual effects.

Buoyed by a boom in motion picture and series production, and commitments from multiple international film productions and streaming series Rising Sun Pictures has expanded by taking charge of the building next to its main studio located in Pulteney Street in Adelaide. The new 5,167 square-foot space, which was acquired to house additional staff, includes a cinema-style screening room, sound proofed meeting and review facilities, and a workspace for up to 80 artists.

Gorilla Adopts MTI Film Cortex Enterprise Mastering, Validation System

Cardiff-based film and video post-production house Gorilla has chosen an MTI Film Cortex Enterprise mastering and validation system for a new 4K high dynamic range mastering suite at its recently expanded GloWorks facility. Supplied by MTI Film distribution partner Big Pic Media, the Cortex forms part of Gorilla's investment in new 4K HDR technology.
