Cinedigm today announced it has acquired the North American distribution rights to Adventures of the Penguin King, a documentary produced by Atlantic Productions that tracks in intimate detail, the exploits of one spunky King Penguin. Shot entirely in 4K 3D digital cinema, the film is told by Tim Allen. Cinedigm is planning a multi-platform release this winter.
Adventures of the Penguin King follows Rex (Allen), a young King Penguin living near the remote island of South Georgia also known as Penguin City, a sub-Antarctic habitat that plays host to leopard and elephant seals, albatrosses, and six million penguins. After years at sea as a bachelor, Rex returns home eager to settle down and start a family. So begins a truly extraordinary and emotion-filled adventure.
“King Penguins are surprisingly expressive, full of character, and despite the harsh realities of filming for five months in the remote Antarctic, we were able to capture a moving and irresistibly comic story of one penguin’s challenge to find a mate and raise a chick,” said Anthony Geffen, the film’s producer and CEO of Atlantic Productions. “We’re delighted that in Cinedigm we’ve found a partner to bring this warm-hearted and compelling film to theatres in the US and Canada.”
“The demand for high quality, family-friendly features has never been stronger and we’re thrilled to be continuing our expansion into this space with Atlantic Productions as partners,” said Vincent Scordino, vice president of theatrical acquisitions for Cinedigm. “Families will be captivated and moved by this wonderfully exciting story and the wildly entertaining Tim Allen.”
From the BAFTA and Emmy Award-winning team at Atlantic Productions, the film was produced in association with British media powerhouse BSkyB and US-based Galileo Digital Entertainment.
Scordino negotiated the deal on behalf of Cinedigm with John Morris of Atlantic Productions.
