Cineplex is Raising a Rukus

Cineplex has installed ten D-Box immersive virtual reality motion seats and systems in its Scotiabank Theatre in Ottawa, Canada. Construction is expected to begin shortly, with plans to open this fall with the Canadian premiere of a first-of-its-kind animated VR motion experience. Created and produced by The Virtual Reality Company, Raising a Rukus takes viewers on a series of magical adventures with a brother, sister and their mischievous pet dog named Rukus.

4DX Reaches 400 Screen Milestone

CJ 4DPlex today announced that its 4DX technology is now available in 400 theatres around the world. The opening of its 400th location makes 4DX the fastest-growing premium cinema format, having reached this milestone in seven-and-a-half years following its debut in 2009. The 400th 4DX location is officially launching today at Wanda Cinemas in Tiantongyuan, Beijing, China, with the screening of Spider-Man: Homecoming – an ideal showcase for an innovative film technology that features motion seats and environmental effects such as rain, fog and various scents.

Bow Tie to Open New PLF Theatre

Bow Tie Cinemas has announced that renovations will begin after Labor Day to upgrade the Marquis 16 and Bow Tie Extreme in Trumbull, Connecticut into a Bow Tie Ultimate theater. Ultimate renovations at the Marquis will include reserved luxury recliner seating in all auditoriums, as well as the installation of Dolby Atmos premium audio presentation in their already established BTX large format experience. In addition, there will be an elevated concession program which includes expanded food and bar menu offerings.

Cinépolis Opens Maryland Theatre

Cinépolis USA is opening a premium large format theatre in Kimco Realty’s Kentlands Market Square in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas-Gaithersburg, anticipated to open in 2019, marks Cinépolis USA’s debut into Maryland and adds to the brand’s existing list of 16 movie houses in the U.S., six of which are Luxury Cinemas. The approximately 34,000-square-foot movie theater will hold 540 seats.

Raising the Stakes

Netflix this week committed to streaming its movies in both Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision high-dynamic range formats. It is the first global on-demand service to commit to combining both formats. Okja, the critically praised Netflix Original Film, is the first film available in both formats. Additional Dolby-supported titles are coming soon, and the catalog will continue to grow. Okja will be released to select movie theatres this week as well. Netflix has raised the stakes again.
