The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers today announced that Shane Murphy has won the $5,000 grand prize in The Vista Project student filmmaker competition and that Jon Navarro was selected as runner-up. Led by cinema-industry pioneer Bud Mayo, chairman of New Vision Theatres, and by Barbara Lange, SMPTE and Hollywood Professional Association executive director, the judging committee named the winners during CinemaCon week, March 27-30 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Green Day and Abramorama are collaborating to distribute the upcoming film Turn it Around: The Story of East Bay Punk to be released across the USA in tandem with Green Day’s Revolution Radio World Tour during the summer of 2017. Abramorama will release the film, which was executive produced by Green Day, in theaters across North America and will work with the filmmakers on the global release across all platforms.
Crunchyroll has announced that the first-ever Anime Movie Night will take place on April 26 in more than 200 theaters nationwide. The quarterly anime cinema programs are made possible through Crunchyroll’s alliance with Screenvision Media, in association with event cinema creators Kaos Connect.
Fathom Events and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment are bringing film festival favorite American Wrestler: The Wizard to movie theaters nationwide for one night only May 3 only. Based on true events, the coming of age story is set in a world of competitive high school wrestling, starring William Fichtner, Jon Voight and introducing newcomer George Kosturos.
Twenty-eight independent theaters in cities across the country will participate in the fourth annual National Evening of Science on Screen. The event will feature a short introductory video, followed by a unique film and speaker presentation at each venue as part of its Science on Screen program. Seattle’s SIFF Cinema and the Northwest Film Forum will present the world premiere of Danger Diva, a Robert McGinley film, with a live rock concert from Thunderpussy on April 13. Danger Diva is a cyberpunk musical thriller that McGinley wrote, directed and produced.
Disney’s Newsies: The Broadway Musical three-day cinema event broke ticketing records to become the highest-grossing Broadway event to date from Fathom Events. An estimated 210,250 people saw the event on big screens across the U.S. on February 16, 18 and 22, amounting to $3.47 million in ticket sales. It also now ranks as the No. 2 top-performing title for Fathom Events to-date.
Fathom Events received the top honor of Best U.S. Distributor at the 2017 Event Cinema Association Conference that took place in London last week. The ECA awards recognize the year’s best achievements in the field of event cinema. It was the second consecutive years that Fathom Events won the award.
