After more than a century, the highly acclaimed 1915 silent thriller Filibus has been fully restored and will be screened at the Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam, which is hosting the 10th Women and the Silent Screen Conference this May 25–29. Not only has the museum done a loving restoration of the film but, in the process, they also answered a question that surrounded the movie and added to its success: what was the name of the actress who played Filibus?
Last July the Event Cinema Association announced that Grainne Peat would be its new managing director, replacing founder Melissa Cogavin who left to pursue other opportunities. Cogavin, who established the ECA in 2012 left behind an internationally recognized brand and the primary trade body for the alternative content sector. The company has unveiled the new cinema brand in the Kingdom, Muvi, which has fifteen sites already at a combination of design, planning and consultancy stages.
UK cinema support company Indy Cinema Group is making its first appearance at CinemaCon this year where it will partnering with independent cinemas in Florida, Virginia and North Carolina. Formed in 2010, Indy offers services such as film booking negotiation, scheduling, marketing, and theatre management systems.
In a week or so, industry professionals from around the world will gather at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas for this year’s CinemaCon, the annual convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners. There, from April 1-4, they will discuss the latest issues, trends and technologies in motion picture distribution and exhibition. For many of them, new technology will be the focus of their attention. This year’s technology conversations seem certain to include three acronyms in particular: HFR, LED and HDR. Chances are, technology centered on one of these will earn a Catalyst Award. But there are always surprises at CinemaCon.
