Award-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser, ASC, ACS, relied on the Creamsource Sky, a water resistant five-color 1200W LED light system from Outsight for Lucasfilm’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. “Creamsource Sky is just so flexible and renders colors amazingly,” said Fraser. “I am obsessed with the technical, and Creamsource Sky produces really great skin tones. That can be a benefit and a curse when having to mix Sky with lights from other manufacturers, so I use a single brand of lighting for each source — one for skylight, one for a window, and another for facial lighting.”
This year marks 100 years since August Arnold and Robert Richter rented a small former shoemaker’s store in Munich and set up shop as a film technology firm. The two young friends started with just one product: a copying machine they built on a lathe Richter had received as a Christmas present from his parents. Taking the first two letters of their surnames, they christened their new enterprise Arri.

In a collaboration with Disney Music Group, Philips Lighting launched LightVibes in the U.S. at the Downtown Independent Theater in Los Angeles on February 16. An audience of music and film industry professionals and artists experienced the immersive light technology along with music video footage from the Star Wars Headspace album, an inspired-by compilation by some of the top and emerging electronic music artists, featuring tracks that integrate sound effects and dialogue from the Star Wars films.
Screenings of Imagine Dragons: Smoke + Mirrors Live music concert will be enhanced with Philips LightVibes. An initial three cinemas will deploy the technology for immersive cinema with more than 790 additional cinemas offering the title via distribution, broadening access to the concert for many more fans around the world. The world premiere of Sweet Summer Sun – Hyde Park Live, an iconic live concert film by The Rolling Stones, was screened on July 15 at Odeon & UCI Cinemas Group’s Kinowelt Ruhr Park cinema in Bochum, Germany. Philips LightVibes created an immersive experience for the audience by adding subtle, meaningful lighting effects during the film to enhance the concer
