Documentary Success

Imax and Warner Bros. Pictures have announced that the documentary adventure Born to be Wild 3D crossed the $20 million threshold at the global box office exclusively in Imax theatres. Since its release last April the film has generated $15.5 million domestically and $5.5 million internationally from 297 theatres. Born to be Wild 3D is scheduled to open in additional theatres worldwide in the coming months.

Cinedigm Acquires Like Water

Cinedigm Entertainment Group has acquired Like Water the documentary exploring the life of UFC champion Anderson Silva for release in North America.  Christine D’Souza and Kevin Iwashina of Preferred Content negotiated the deal on behalf of the producer. The project will be released theatrically in early summer. Lionsgate will handle domestic ancillary distribution. Cinemavault is handling all international rights for Like Water outside of North America.

Odd Brodsky Manages on Tight Budget

Cinematographer Matthew Irving and director/producer Cindy Baer had very little money to make their feature film Odd Brodsky. Irving has been the cinematographer on two dozen feature films including Fox Searchlight’s hit romantic comedy Waitress and Lionsgate’s teen comedy Waiting but when he and director/producer Baer conceived the story for the ultra low-budget Odd Brodsky they were concerned about the limited resources.

The Adventures of Tintin Wins Golden Globe for Animation

Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson’s The Adventures of Tintin was this year’s Golden Globe winner for Best Animated Feature Film. NewTek’s vice president and head of 3D software development Rob Powers served as supervisor of the Virtual Art Department for Tintin prior to joining NewTek. A VAD is much more than previs. It involves interacting with the entire film creating virtual environments—complete with lighting texturing and atmospherics—that the director can use to explore how live actors interact within a 3D scene.

XDC Signs Deal with Unique Digital for the Rosettabridge TMS

XDC has signed a supply and support agreement with Unique Digital to add the Rosettabridge theatre management system as part of its integrated product portfolio. XDC is now including Rosettabridge as part of the virtual print fee deployment packages and in addition will supply the TMS to non-VPF customers through their integrator arm FTT.
