Zecotek Photonics has announced that the European Patent Office has issued a Notice of Allowance and the Eurasian Patent Office has issued a Notification on Readiness to Grant a Eurasian Patent for the 3D/2D switchable optical imaging system for its glasses-free 3D auto-stereoscopic display system. The European Notice of Allowance and the Eurasian Notification on Readiness add to the other global patents including U.S.
Testronic Labs has announced that its File-Based QC Lab has implemented a Veristream testing tool designed by Deluxe Digital Studios. “Studios are actively exploring solutions that incorporate highly developed automated tools to improve production efficiency ” says Seth Hallen CEO of Testronic. “To that end we have been working with Deluxe Digital Studios to support this development and to implement their toolsets into our workflows.

Animation studio Laika has purchased a site licence of Katana from The Foundry and plans to fully implement the software on its next feature film production. Laika is the world-renowned animation studio behind the Academy Award-nominated Coraline (2009) the first stop-motion feature film to be conceived and photographed in stereoscopic 3D and forthcoming release ParaNorman (in 3D in select theatres this summer). Laika’s decision to purchase a site licence comes as the VFX team looks for ways to better manage the consistency of lighting and handle increasingly complex shots.
On May 16th Philip Mosley the real life inspiration for the character Billy Elliot of film and musical theater fame will be the person dancing in clogs on the stage of London's Royal Ballet. American audiences will see Mosley joined by Royal Ballet principals and corps members dancing the exhilarating energetic choreography of Frederick Ashton when Ballet in Cinema from Emerging Pictures brings this comedic romantic ballet to the big screen Live in HD from London's Royal Ballet.
To fully appreciate the fact that we are currently in the very early days of stereoscopic 3D movies it helps to have the perspective of some of the most talented filmmakers of the era. With that in mind it was fascinating that the second annual CinemaCon held last month at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas again featured a luncheon during which major filmmakers discussed their work and the state of the motion picture business. Last year it was James Cameron and George Lucas with Jeffrey Katzenberg moderating.
The exhibition industry has clearly joined the 21st century. A decade ago when we launched Digital Cinema Report the prevailing thinking at events such as ShoWest and ShowEast was that the movie business was working just fine the way it had for a hundred years and there was no real need to change to the digital devices that some people were then beginning to offer. Cut to CinemaCon 2012 which was held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas last month and everything has changed.
Trade shows the size of the National Association of Broadcasters convention which this year had more than 90 000 attendees all have one thing in common: they are a large collection of people and ideas gathered around a single organizing theme. For the NAB held annually in April in Las Vegas the theme for the past few years has been “Where Content Comes to Life.” Increasingly this encompasses a wide and diverse selection of approaches to the same basic concept which is developing the best ways to deliver audio and video information to a mass audience. LA-based creative design and production company Super 78 Studios is producing an animated feature for release in both the U.S. and China in late 2013. China Dinosaur Land one of China’s largest and most popular theme parks has partnered with the company to co-produce the film while developing the concept for an attraction that will be built in the park. Mido Dino is a family animated feature in a magical world where dinosaurs and humans live together.
