The 3D Learning Curve

To fully appreciate the fact that we are currently in the very early days of stereoscopic 3D movies it helps to have the perspective of some of the most talented filmmakers of the era. With that in mind it was fascinating that the second annual CinemaCon held last month at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas again featured a luncheon during which major filmmakers discussed their work and the state of the motion picture business. Last year it was James Cameron and George Lucas with Jeffrey Katzenberg moderating.

Faster Brighter Bigger Better

The exhibition industry has clearly joined the 21st century. A decade ago when we launched Digital Cinema Report the prevailing thinking at events such as ShoWest and ShowEast was that the movie business was working just fine the way it had for a hundred years and there was no real need to change to the digital devices that some people were then beginning to offer. Cut to CinemaCon 2012 which was held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas last month and everything has changed.

Organized Chaos

Trade shows the size of the National Association of Broadcasters convention which this year had more than 90 000 attendees all have one thing in common: they are a large collection of people and ideas gathered around a single organizing theme. For the NAB held annually in April in Las Vegas the theme for the past few years has been “Where Content Comes to Life.” Increasingly this encompasses a wide and diverse selection of approaches to the same basic concept which is developing the best ways to deliver audio and video information to a mass audience. Sounds simple and in theory it is.

Expanding Mido Dino’s World

LA-based creative design and production company Super 78 Studios is producing an animated feature for release in both the U.S. and China in late 2013.  China Dinosaur Land one of China’s largest and most popular theme parks has partnered with the company to co-produce the film while developing the concept for an attraction that will be built in the park. Mido Dino is a family animated feature in a magical world where dinosaurs and humans live together.

Designed and installed by Christie Managed Services as part of a complete customized solution the boothless systems free up space for an additional row of seating that would normally have been taken up by the projection booths.

Streamlining the Red Tails Workflow

Just as WWII united powerful militaries from around the globe the making of George Lucas’s Red Tails brought together some of the best talents and brightest minds in the movie business from around the world. Various remote studios contributed computer graphics imagery and visual effects while one firm Radical 3D in Venice California handled all the pre-visualization.

Rooftop Films Announces Summer Series Schedule

Rooftop Films 2012 Summer Series presented by AT&T has announced its full line-up including short programs dates and venues. Rooftop Films will screen 23 feature films and 183 short films including New York US and world premieres. The films come from around the world with offbeat comedies intimate and intense dramas and personal documentaries. Most events include live music filmmaker Q&As special appearances by the films’ casts and subjects and after-parties with complementary drinks every weekend until August 18.

Schneider Introduces S2000 Century/Canon 17mm Lens

Schneider Optics has introduced the S2000 Century/Canon 17mm T4 Tilt-Focus Lens in PL Mount. Ideal for use on cameras with up to a S35 sensor this new converted lens offers 360 degrees of rotation and 8 degrees of tilt in any direction for remarkable control of the subject focus plane. The lens' tilt and rotation adjustments can be made before or even during a shot for a wide variety of effects. The desired degree of rotation is fixed via a lever while a locking knob secures the selected tilt angle.

Trevor Forrest Wins Tribeca Cinematography Award for Una Noche

Trevor Forrest won the Tribeca Film Festival Award for Best Cinematography for his work on the much-discussed Una Noche.
 
The riveting story of Cuban teenagers attempting to defect to America has since become a case of life imitating art with the apparent defection of two actors. Una Noche premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and previously received the 2009 Spike Lee Production Award. The United States premiere of Una Noche at Tribeca Film Festival received an overwhelmingly positive response.

XDC to Present Opera on Ice

XDC Entertainment has announced the Europe-wide release in June of classical ice dancing extravaganza Opera On Ice in cinemas in HD. Through their continued association with Nexo Digital XDC have acquired rights to release the event available on DCP in Poland Spain Portugal Finland Denmark Sweden UK and Ireland.
