Filming The Rescue

Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi's film, The Rescue tells the story of the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue in which twelve boys from the Wild Boars Football club and their coach were trapped in a flooded cave complex in Thailand. Documenting the huge risks taken by a team of specialist divers during the rescue, the production combines documentary footage with painstaking dramatic reconstructions shot by top underwater cinematographer Ian Seabrook.

Color Grading The Old Man

The FX original series The Old Man stars Jeff Bridges as the eponymous lead, former CIA operative Dan Chase, whose off-the-grid existence is rudely interrupted when an intruder breaks into his home. The confrontation sets off an epic game of cat and mouse, forcing Chase to go on the run as multiple parties seek to either bring him in or take him down. Sean Porter served as lead cinematographer for the series’ first season and shot four of the seven episodes, with Jules O’Loughlin, ACS, ASC and Armando Salas, ASC handling the remainder.

Creating a Real World for Star Trek

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is spin-off from Star Trek: Discovery and a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike and the crew of the USS. Enterprise. Cinematographer Glen Keenan, CSC, wanted to give the show the most organic, non-studio look to convince the audience they were seeing a real location.

AFI Announces the 2022 Cinematography Intensive for Women

The American Film Institute has announced a call for applicants for the 2022 Cinematography Intensive for Women presented by Panavision. Returning after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the four-day program will be held on the AFI Campus in Los Angeles on Friday, July 15 through Monday, July 18. Designed for aspiring cinematographers, the goal of the program is to provide participants with a toolkit to secure on-set experience in the field and first-hand industry insights demonstrating the path to professional career success.

Nice Shoes Color Grades A Father’s Son

Color grading and editorial finishing for A Father’s Son, director Patrick Chen’s short film about the murder of a teenage boy in Manhattan’s Chinatown, was completed at Nice Shoes in preparation for its world premiere at the 17th Annual Disorient Asian American Film Festival in Oregon. Colorist Phil Choe worked with Chen, cinematographer Jason Chew and editor Xiaoya (Patricia) Ma in polishing the look of the film.

Arri Supports Canadian Society of Cinematographers with Major Donation

Arri will support the Canadian Society of Cinematographers’ The Future is Calling campaign with a contribution of $300,000 in Canadian currency. The $3.75 million campaign, launched in November, will support a national outreach, education, internship, and online educational program to break down barriers marginalized communities face in accessing jobs in the film and television industry. The campaign has received support from the industry, government, and philanthropic funders. More than half the goal has been pledged to date.
