Submissions Open September 1 for 71st Annual MPSE Awards

The Motion Picture Sound Editors today announced that submissions for the 71st Annual MPSE Golden Reel Awards will open Thursday, September 1. The Golden Reel Awards honor outstanding achievement in sound editing in categories spanning feature films, long-form and short-form television, animation, documentaries, games, and student work.

Cinematographer Lawrence Sher Talks about Color

Lawrence Sher, ASC, is an American cinematographer and film director best known for his work on Joker (2019), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), War Dogs (2016), The Hangover (2009) and Garden State (2004). He has just completed filming Joker: Folie a deux – the follow up to the 2019 film which comes out in 2024. Last month he was appointed as the president of the 2023 FilmLight Color Awards jury. The winners of the award will be announced in November at EnergaCamerImage. Sher recently spoke with Digital Cinema Report via email about cinematography, about the role of color in the filmmaking process and about the color awards themselves. Here is that conversation.

Film Heritage Foundation to Honor Cinema Projectionists

The Film Heritage Foundation has announced a special ceremony to present the inaugural lifetime achievement award for cinema projection "to honor film projectionists who have dedicated their lives to showcasing films on the big screen." Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, founder of FHF, said the Mumbai-based foundation will honor three projectionists at the event, to be held on Wednesday at the city's heritage Regal Cinema here. The foundation will screen Kamal Amrohi's 1949 classic Mahal on 35 mm vintage print to celebrate the analog-era legacy of cinema at Regal Cinema, a single-screen theatre.

Die Hard UK’s Favorite Action Movie

Die Hard has been named the UK’s favorite action movie of all time, according to new national research. The 1988 all-out-action classic, starring Bruce Willis as a New York City police detective, took 18 percent of the vote, beating out competition from Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark and Tom Cruise favorite Top Gun (13 percent), according to the nationwide study carried out by Showcase Cinemas.

Three Ukrainian Filmmakers Win Göteborg Film Festival Residencies

Three Ukrainian directors and screenwriters have been selected for residencies at Göteborg Film Festival. The three selected participants will spend August-September in Gothenburg, working in different ways with their projects at the offices of Göteborg Film Festival and getting introduced to the local film industry. The residency program is a cooperation with HDK-Valand, at the University of Gothenburg, and financed by Region Västra Götaland.
