Many documentary filmmakers turn to fundraising to finance their films. But not every filmmaker turns to fundraising to support the work of her subject. Producer/director Beth Murphy is using her film, What Tomorrow Brings, about visionary Razia Jan to help raise funds for what will be the first women’s college in rural Afghanistan.

Strand Releasing has announced that the company is acquiring North American rights to Antonio Santini and Dan Sickles’ critically acclaimed documentary Mala Mala, executive produced by Killer Films’ Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler and produced by Santini and Sickles’ El Peligro Productions. A celebration of the trans and drag communities in Puerto Rico, the film made its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival and will have its highly anticipated debut in theaters on July 1st at the IFC Center.

Cinedigm has acquired North American theatrical, digital and home entertainment distribution rights to A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story. The highly acclaimed documentary premiered last month at SXSW, received multiple standing ovations and won the prestigious festival’s Audience Award in its category.
