Film Independent, the nonprofit arts organization that produces the Spirit Awards, announced the 13 filmmakers and eight projects selected for its 2019 Documentary Lab. The Lab is an intensive two-week program designed to help filmmakers who are currently in post-production on their feature-length documentary films.
Each year, Digital Cinema Report presents a Catalyst Award to the best new technology introduced at CinemaCon, the annual convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners. For the 14th year, The Hollywood Professional Association will honor the companies and individuals who draw upon technical and creative ingenuity to develop breakthrough technologies with the HPA Engineering Excellence Award. The call for entries for the Engineering Excellence submissions will close on May 24.
CinemaCon’s Excellence in Event Cinema Award will be presented to Warner Bros. for their continued interest and success in creating theatrical experiences around content from the company’s various divisions, including Warner Bros. theatrical, home entertainment and DC Comics.

Cinema-industry veteran Susie Beiersdorf, vice president of sales, cinema – The Americas, Christie, has been selected as the 2019 recipient of the Ken Mason Inter-Society Award. The Ken Mason Award honors an individual who has made outstanding long-term contributions leading to the overall improvement of the motion picture experience. The announcement was made today by Paul Holliman, president, The Inter-Society for the Enhancement of Cinema Presentation. Beiersdorf will receive the award at a ceremony held at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on April 4.
Anthony Bloom, chairman Cineworld Group, will receive this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award at CinemaCon 2019. Mitch Neuhauser, managing director of the show made the announcement. CinemaCon, the official convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners, will be held April 1-4 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Bloom will be presented with this honor during opening night festivities.
Jérôme Seydoux, co-chairman and CEO of Pathé and chairman and CEO, Les Cinemas Pathe Gaumont, will receive this year’s Career Achievement in Exhibition Award, Mitch Neuhauser, managing director of CinemaCon announced today. CinemaCon, the official convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners, will be held April 1-4 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Seydoux will be presented with this honor at the International Day Luncheon taking place on April 1.
In its 14th year of supporting the National Film and Theatre School, this year’s Christie’s prize for Most Promising NFTS Student was awarded to graduating composer, Will Turner. Turner received a Christie DHD599-GS projector.
The Motion Pictures Sound Editors presented the 66th MPSE Annual Golden Reel Awards at a black-tie ceremony at the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles last Saturday night. Golden Reel Awards recognizing outstanding achievement in sound editing were presented in 23 categories encompassing feature films, long-form and short-form television, animation, documentaries, games, special venue and other media.
