Behind-the-scenes, Codex workflow systems, operated by Santa Monica, London and Atlanta based production services company Shed, are enabling the smooth and speedy transition of a river of 8K data from on-set into post production. The cinematographer on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is Henry Braham BSC, who previously used Red Epic cameras on The Legend of Tarzan. Walking The Walk

Tue, 03/08/2016 - 13:00 -- Nick Dager

The Walk feature film, Atomic Fiction’s digital recreation of 1974 New York City—complete with hot dogs steaming on a vendor cart—earned the praise of critics who proclaimed the movie “a visual spectacle” with effects “so grand it’s easy to forget you’re watching a virtual 100 percent CG-created world.” Less visible but equally important to filmmaker clients is the studio’s behind-the-scenes production artistry. Marc Sadeghi, president of Visual Effects at Atomic Fiction said, “By combining the power of technology, the creativity of passionate artists, and a collaborative approach to working with filmmakers, we’re able to overcome the challenges inherent to VFX production. As a result, we can satisfy both the VFX appetites and production deadlines of our clients.”

Citizen Pictures Adds Xcellis Workflow

Tue, 02/23/2016 - 11:59 -- Nick Dager

Denver-based post-production house Citizen Pictures has deployed Xcellis workflow storage, powered by Quantum's StorNext platform, to achieve greater efficiency in meeting tight production deadlines. Supplied and integrated by Quantum partner StorExcel, the Xsan-compatible Xcellis system is a highly scalable, easy-to-manage solution that increases the flexibility and productivity possible within Citizen Pictures' collaborative media workflow. Citizen Pictures is an Emmy Award-winning, lifestyle-focused content-creation company that specializes in high profile, talent-driven productions, largely for food-oriented networks and digital platforms. With a team of about 25 people, it creates programs such as Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Smoked and Guy & Hunter's European Vacation. Until it deployed the Quantum Xcellis storage solution, Citizen Pictures had relied on an aging Xserve infrastructure with limitations that the company recognized would eventually prevent it from maintaining the capacity and performance necessary to meet production deadlines.

Shooting Digital, Reluctantly

Tue, 09/22/2015 - 11:31 -- Nick Dager

Two-time Oscar nominee John Mathieson BSC (Gladiator, The Phantom of the Opera, Robin Hood, 47 Ronin) recently completed work on The Man from U.N.C.L.E., an update of the stylish 1960s television series of the same name. Mathieson says that he would have preferred to shoot film, but that the demise of some of the major film laboratories in the U.K. made it impossible. He did shoot a little bit of 16mm film on a wind-up Bolex (processed at Bucks Laboratories) for the opening of the film, to bridge some archival footage from the period with the main storyline. In some ways, the colors and textures of the period production design lent themselves to digital, he says.
