IndiePix Launches West Coast Operation

IndiePix the internet-based distributor of independent films has announced the expansion of its operations with the launch of a new West Coast office. Director of Acquisitions Jason Tyrrell will head-up the new efforts beginning with the establishment of an IndiePix satellite office in Hollywood. In addition to discovering more West Coast independent filmmakers Tyrrell will cover additional film festivals in the Midwest Southwest and Asia with the view to developing new projects for potential production through IndiePix Studios.

Industrial Light & Magic Turns to Luxology modo

The Art Department at San Francisco-based Industrial Light & Magic is now using Luxology's 3D modeling and rendering software modo to increase speed flexibility and efficiency. Our clients rely on the ILM art department to create world-class concept art and design for their films. To generate that type of work we utilize best-of-breed tools and modo is turning out to be a terrific 3D tool for the team says Richard Kerris CTO at Lucasfilm Ltd. modo is playing a key role in how certain looks and concepts are best created and it has earned its place in our toolset.

Zentropa Installs Clipster for Digital Cinema Post Work

Zentropa the largest film production company in Denmark has installed a DVS Clipster. Film director Lars von Trier founded the company. The Clipster will complete the infrastructure of Zentropa’s own digital cinema post-production capabilities. Lars Dela technical director at Zentropa says  We are impressed with Clipster's multifunctionality and versatility. We carry out all essential steps to the finished DCP check the DPX files edit RAW material in real-time and apply Clipster for HD Mastering.

enkHouse Partners with KiwiTech to Develop Enhanced Books

Brown Books Publishing Group digital division enkHouse has announced the launch of its joint venture with KiwiTech to develop enhanced eBooks and film-based applications. The launch comes within days of Penguin Publishing and Starz Entertainment releasing their first “amplified eBook Ken Follett’s Pillars of the Earth.  
 Rakesh Gupta CEO and founder of KiwiTech also founded and led Aptara Corporation the largest eBook publishing services company in the world.

What is the Future of the 3D Surcharge?

In an admittedly unscientific and random survey we posed this question to exhibitors and movie patrons on various social media sites: How much longer will you pay/charge a premium to see a 3D movie? Here are some of the responses: Rod Sterling chief engineer
 JVC Technology Center The content is vastly different in quality agreed and some movies are worth it. But there are other things that are driving this as well. I’ve been to too many showings where the left and right eyes were reversed and I had to wear my glasses upside down.

AMC Opens ETX Theatre in Kansas City Missouri

North Carolina Broadens Film Tax Incentives

North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue has signed a new 25 percent film incentive into law that took effect last month. The new legislation broadens qualifying expenses including but not limited to labor fringe benefits (including health pension and welfare contributions); per diems stipends and living expenses; most importantly it raises the overall project eligibility cap from $7.5 million to $20 million per project. 

 The new legislation also repeals the corporate income tax on incentives taken by production companies.

QSC Releases DCP 100 Digital Cinema Processor

QSC Audio Products has released the DCP 100 Digital Cinema Processor which provides complete signal processing and monitoring functions in a single integrated rack-mount system. The DCP 100 offers many of the same features as the DCP 300 but at a lower price and is designed for six to eight channel systems that do not require CobraNet network audio distribution or 16 input channels.

The Karate Kid Premieres in the UK at the Odeon

The UK premiere of Sony Pictures’ The Karate Kid was held at the famous Odeon Cinema in Leicester Square. The premiere was presented using the theatre’s Sony Digital Cinema 4K projection system. In addition to the premiere  movie was also released to theatres worldwide as a 4K Digital Cinema Package. The film centers on the story of Dre Parker a 12-year old who moves with his mother from Detroit to China. After making a connection with his new classmate Mei Ying Dre makes enemies with the class bully Cheng.
