Element Technica’s 3D Rig goes Underwater

Element Technica’s 3D Neutron rig mounted with Silicon Imaging SI-2K cameras can now be enclosed in the purpose-built Neutron Borg 3D underwater housing system from HydroFlex. The underwater 3D camera system incorporates a Cinedeck recorder inside the housing. The Neutron 3D rig’s small form-factor is particularly desirable for underwater use because it makes a compact underwater housing possible. Previously underwater 3D camera crews had to wrestle behemoth underwater systems enclosing large rigs and cameras.

Eliminating the Projection Booth

One of the promises of digital cinema technology is maximizing theatre space and as an example B&B Theatres’ Wildwood 10 now boasts Missouri’s first multiplex without a traditional projectionist booth and requires no human operator. Kansas-based Sonic Equipment Company installed Christie Solaria Series digital cinema projectors in the booth-less auditoriums. The projectors sit on platforms supported by 16-foot beams that moviegoers can walk under with a control room on a lower level that is the heart of the digital cinema system.

And that’s precisely what happened at the International 3D Society’s 2nd Annual 3D Creative Arts Awards on February 9. With loads of 3D clips and silly gags from host comedian Tom Cavanagh (Yogi Bear) the evening was high energy in all directions and the audience wasn’t able to look away. “You are all part of history tonight ” said Cavanaugh noting that it was the first-ever Hollywood awards show recorded and aired in 3D.

Julia Roberts Given ASC 2011 Board of Governors Award

Barco Releases Dedicated Digital Cinema Projector for Post Production

Barco has announced the commercial release of its DP2K-P a digital cinema projector specifically designed for the needs of the post-production community. It features an expanded color gamut and contrast brightness uniformity and specialized post-production software. The company says the DP2K-P meets the stern performance demands of post-production houses as well as the review room requirements outlined in the DCI specification.

Bighorn' Explores General Custer's Super Bowl Connection

Did a last-minute decision by George Armstrong Custer at the fateful Battle of the Little Bighorn affect the outcome of a Super Bowl?  That's the strange but intriguing premise behind Bighorn a 15-minute supernatural historical fantasy based on a true story. In 1876 General Custer's bandmaster Felix Vinatieri an Italian immigrant and the great-great-grandfather of NFL kicker Adam Vinatieri was ordered to stay behind at the 7th Cavalry's Powder River camp and missed the Battle of the Little Bighorn where Custer and his entire regiment were annihilated.

China National Film Museum Upgrades to 3D

The China National Film Museum has installed a Barco DP2K-32B digital cinema projector to present 3D programs in the museum's IMAX Theatre. Currently the largest specialized cinema museum in the world the China National Film Museum is a monument to Chinese cinema. Arri Certifies Codex on ArriRAW T-Link

Arri has given an ArriRAW T-Link (Transport Link) certificate to Codex Digital confirming the ability of its recorders to record raw data from the Arri Alexa film-style camera. The certificate states that Codex Onboard Recorders meet rigorous standards set by Arri and can perform tasks required when using the Alexa camera in ArriRAW mode including recording the ArriRAW T-link stream showing a live preview while recording and playback of ArriRAW images. Codex Digital received a similar certificate in 2008 for recording ArriRAW from the Arriflex D-21 camera for the Codex Studio Recorder.
