Getting Down to Business: CinemaCon 2011

Timing is everything in life. The last several years of the exhibition event ShoWest will always be remembered to a certain degree with the phrase “just around the corner ” a reference to the frustrations of getting the digital cinema transition in full gear. In contrast the inaugural CinemaCon is likely to be remembered with phrases such as “gold rush” as an astonishing number of business deals were announced during the show’s four days. This is often the case at trade shows when there are few major new technology introductions.

EFA Partners Secures Funding for Malco Theatres

EFA Partners has announced that it led and advised the recently closed financing facility for Malco Theatres to fund the conversion of more than 320 screens at 30 locations throughout the Southeastern United States.   “EFA’s unique knowledge and experience with film exhibition and digital cinema was extremely helpful in leading our financing process ” says Bobby Levy executive vice president of Malco Theatres.

Ocean Telecine Controller Now Supports Cintel DSX C-Reality

Marquise Technologies has announced that its Ocean telecine controller now supports Cintel DSX and C-Reality telecine family. Many prestigious clients of Cintel own a DSX telecine it’s a very impressive machine in terms of features and quality. Now relying on an up-to-date and maintained telecine controller they can continue to benefit from their initial investment says Laurence Stoll CEO of Marquise Technologies. The support for DSX also includes the ability to remote control Cintel’s Oliver system (dust and scratch removal tool).

Prime Focus Converting Star Wars: Episode I

Lucasfilm and Prime Focus have announced that they are collaborating on the 3D conversion of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace for theatrical release Prime Focus was selected by Lucasfilm and Industrial Light & Magic following an exhaustive testing process. Utilizing Prime Focus' proprietary View-D process the conversion is scheduled to hit 3D theatre screens on February 10 2012. It was incredibly important to me that we have the technology the resources and the time to do this right says Star Wars creator George Lucas.

Manhattan Film Festival Launches Revenue Sharing Program

The Manhattan Film Festival has launched a Filmmaker Revenue Sharing Program. Since their inception they have made it a priority to find new ways to help filmmakers make a career out of filmmaking. While not an easy task they believe their new program is the game-changer they have been searching for. The platform they have built has the potential to yield filmmakers tens of thousands of dollars.       The Filmmaker Revenue Sharing Program will allow filmmakers to promote and sell festival tickets while earning 50 percent of the revenue.

Laser Illuminated Projector Association Launched

The Laser Illuminated Projector Association has launched with the goals of explaining the benefits of laser-lluminated projectors advocating for a positive regulatory environment and developing appropriate training guidelines. The announcement was made t by the LIPA Advisory Committee composed of industry leaders Barco Christie Digital Eastman Kodak IMAX Corporation Laser Light Engines NEC Display Solutions Necsel/Ushio and Sony.

Rushes Installs Cintel ditto Film Scanner

Rushes Post Production London has purchased a diTTo evolution film scanner from Cintel International.  The diTTo evolution will scan 35mm 2 3 and 4-perf film as well as 16mm film to 2K and 4K data for grading in the Resolve Color Correction suite.
 
 Rushes’ technical director Tim Wharton says “Image quality is the major consideration in everything we do at Rushes and the images from diTTo evolution are second to none.

Spatial View Signs Licensing Agreement for PassmoreLab 3D Content

3DeeCentral.com. Spatial View’s online source of stereo 3D content has entered into a licensing agreement with San Diego-based 3D Studio PassmoreLab for a number of their 3D titles. 3DeeCentral includes paid and free 3D content available for 3D PCs mobile and internet-connected devices. The content agreement includes titles in the genres of science and nature music videos extreme sports and animation. The platforms support a number of 3D devices using active shutter glasses polarized glasses anaglyph and auto-stereoscopic technologies.

El Chico Blanco Production to start in June

Titan Worldwide Entertainment will begin shooting the El Chico Blanco in June it was announced by chairman and CEO Brad Feinstein. 

El Chico Blanco tells the story of Ben Harper a white outcast raised in the barrio rises to a position of power against all odds. During a stint in prison he overcomes racial tension and biases to become the head of a notorious crime family entering into a world of drugs wealth and power. The film will be shot on location in New Mexico.
