Imax Newsweek & The Daily Beast have announced The Imax Award which recognizes up-and-coming filmmakers whose entries best capture the theme of exploration. The contest will commemorate the publication of Newsweek's Explorer Issue on sale January 6 and celebrate Imax's 40-year legacy of creating inspiring documentary films that explore the wonders of the universe.

Kodak Adds to Archival Stock Line

Kodak has added another product to its portfolio of asset protection films. Kodak Vision3 Digital Separation Film 2237 is a black-and-white separation film for preserving images from color digital masters.

This archival film is optimized for laser CRT and LED light sources utilized by digital recorders in the marketplace.

Shooting at a Slow Frame Rate

Aerial cinematographer David B. Nowell has been spending a lot of time in the air recently shooting for major motion pictures and while there is a lot of discussion about high frame rates for a recent shoot he elected to go in the opposite direction. “One of my most recent assignments was over the sand lava fields mountains and glaciers of Iceland ” he said. “We needed to get plate shots for a special helicopter/jet aircraft that is flying through the country’s very narrow canyons.

Rooftop Films Holds First Horror Movie Marathon

Rooftop Films held the first ever indie-horror-film marathon last month at the Brooklyn Lyceum. There was no charge for admission and the event included music prizes and complimentary drinks and food. The film marathon began at 4 pm and continued until midnight.

The event kicked off with a reception featuring music projections and complimentary food and drink. The films started at 5 pm with a special screening of Jeremy Saulnier’s Brooklyn-based slasher comedy  Murder Party.

NATO’s CBG Signs More Than 3 000 Independent Screens for Digital Conversion

The National Association of Theatre Owners' Cinema Buying Group has announced that it has now signed over 3 000 independent CBG screens for conversion to digital cinema. Cinedigm is the digital cinema integrator partner for the CBG a buying program for NATO's independent theatre operators in the United States and Canada and is responsible for deploying nearly 40 percent of all digital cinema screens in North America. “NATO and the CBG congratulate Cinedigm on the momentous 3 000 screen milestone ” said NATO president John Fithian.

Star Grill Cinema recently equipped all 21 screens across its three Texas locations with Sony 4K projection now providing their customers the highest-quality movie-viewing experience.   Star Cinema offers their guests an extensive dining menu and full-service bar with a wide selection of beer wine and spirits. Now the theaters’ digital conversion allows them to offer “the best of both worlds ” according to owner Omar Khan.   “We want to make sure our customers have the best meal they’ve had in a long time ” Khan said.

Making the Switch to Multi-Camera Shooting

Disney’s Pair of Kings is an unusual multi-camera series to say the least. It is filled with incredible battles and amazing stunts as well as special effects and “lots of really funny stuff ” said director of photography Johnny Simmons ASC. “We shoot both four-camera and single camera style; maintaining the use of all four cameras shooting coverage inside the proscenium. “On the multi-camera shows that I’ve been shooting Vinten has pretty much been the standard ” he said. “Coming from single camera I wasn’t that familiar with what sitcom camera operators wanted to use.
